BEST key blanks???

I am not a locksmith, so i thought i'd better ask some. i was just wondering if there were any BEST key blanks that are restricted, or illegal for the "average joe" to purchase. Thanks ahead for any and all help.

**I know there is probably someone that is going to grill me thinking i am going to break the law. I AM not breaking the law, just need a blank, or information on where to find one, online maybe.

I just wanted to grill you on why you use so many question marks at the end of each of your post topics?

yes, there are restricted blanks from best, but I dont think any are illegal to own. Just difficult to get. If you know the blank you are looking for, check ebay, people often sell a couple or even a box full, and some are hard to find keyways.

I find it hard to believe that they are really "illegal" by law versus some catchy line on their website that tells you that it is illegal. It sounds more like a sales gimmick they would tell you in order to make you feel like they're sellling better key control than other lock companies. This is like stamping "Unlawful to Duplicate" on a key, it's not actually unlawful, but it may scare enough people, so that they don't try to copy the keys because the police will get them. I just don't see BEST or other lock companies having that kind of reach. Now, if you start making generic blanks of patented keyways and selling those blanks, then I could see them going after you.

I wonder though how true this claim of legal possession is for BEST sfic blanks which I think the op was asking about, as Kaba Peaks is just one of the many families of lock products BEST Access Systems has on the market.

Patent laws don't apply to ownership of the invention, so it can't be illegal to own a key blank (unless it falls under some burglary tool law, which does not match any US state laws that I know of, including prima facie states).

It make be illegal to "use" a key blank, as that is part of patent protection. The majority of patent notices on lock sites are there to say that unauthorized manufacturing of key blanks is against the law, which is true. This means, assuming all major players follow the law, that obtaining blanks for a given lock should be harder when manufacturing is legally restricted to a select few companies.

the lock i am talking about would be about 15 yrs old. so it is definitly not their top of the line keyway anymore, well i wouldn't assume it anyhow. the problem is that the key just has the code on it for a locksmith to copy. nothing to tell what blank it is. except it has an A on it, but it is not a A2 blank. if it helps, if you look at the keyway is looks something like a #7.

I cannot locate the other best topic, but someone else had basically the same thing you did about a month or so ago.

That "code" on the key is NOT for a locksmith to make a copy of the key. That code is only for in house purposes- if you know where the lock was made for (building, etc) and had their masterkeying paperwork, than yes, that code would work for a locksmith.


But, if you take that key in, as is, they will not be able to make a duplicate by the "code" on the key.

If you post a picture I'm sure I, or anyone else here with a BEST keyway chart, could help you. There is probably one online as well, so if you go looking for it, just compare to your cylinder. Unless your lock is from a Municipality, Government, Or some other "State" controlled keyway, you most likely have a normal best keyway. Most BEST keyways are just normal. Check with Jet to see if they have a keyway chart online. Or check Stanley, the new (relatively) owner of BEST access control systems.

There is one keyblank that you can't be caught with, its the keys for mailbox lock, as you see in the post office, they look like a yale only they are opposed, I don't remember the name of them off the top of my head.

BEST Peaks, marketed in corroboration with KABA is protected by patent. Best MX8 is also patent protected.

For everything else, they're fair game. The TC is not made by Ilco or JET and it is very hard to come by. The PKS (keyway with designation starting with W) are also very hard to come by.

Some people abuse this key blanks and had used it for some bad deeds, well try searching
on some Locksmith courses sites I'm sure you'll find what are you looking for to those sites

FM is the master keyway for A-R. If you can get your hands on one of those and it slides in, you know it should be available from most any locksmith.

Um, no it isn't. FM is sketchy at best and quality control is inadequate even with top brand like Ilco. Best offers such multiplex blanks and if you're going to use the FM, OEM is the only way to go.

It's supposed to fit A,D,E,F and G. It does not fit B,C and H & above. The thing is that, Best knows exactly what machining tolerances are for their cylinders, so they can make it properly. Third parties, not so. I've got some Star brand that do not fit F keyways.
