Question about some stuff inside a Medeco

Also I was under the impression that the key for this lock would be the round one shown in JK's website not the big square one that I got. Did they just get rid of that design and now only use the big square ones?

Medeco uses different keyhead designs for different keyways. For example I have a medeco padlock manufactured in 2009 with a round keyway. The core in this padlock is biaxial which traditionally uses square keys.



As for a side by side pin comparison of classic vs biaxial, here are pins taken out of a S&G 831-B (Medeco Classic) and my Medeco padlock (Medeco Biaxial) so you can clearly see the difference.

Ahh I see. By round keyway what exactly do ya mean? Forgive my ignorance I think I understand what you mean but not totally sure. As far as the pins yeah my pins are definitely the ones on the Left so none Biaxial. Also no ARX like I had previously thought.

Round keyway? Oh oops I made a typo, I meant round keyhead. Most of my medeco biaxial cores I own come with square keyheads. This specific padlock has a round keyhead.

Yes biaxial is the stamp on the left of the keyway the thing that looks like a circle sliced in the middle.

They should have made sure that at least two of those top pins were mushrooms. I forget which standard it is (BHMA 156.30 or UL437). I think its 156.30 that requires at least 2 security pins. Either way, once you get used to them, the mushrooms are no big deal.

Hrm do you think it would be wise of me to go back and see about getting this fixed? The lock did previously have 2 mushrooms but now has none. I'm also starting to wonder if I was over charged a bit on this one. As being a complete novice to Medeco's I have no idea on the going rate of rekeying one.

Well I went back today and the cylinder now has 3 mushrooms. Haha best part is there was a few people in the shop wanting to get other stuff done and they guys hands me the Medeco pin box and is like here ya go have at it. When he was done with the rest of the customers I was pretty much done as well and the guy laughs and sais "your my first customer who came in and pined his own lock you really know what your doing" that made me feel good =)

When you take out pins to practice picking it, Start with non-mushrooms so you can get a feel of the sidebar kicking in without worrying about false set.

Yeah I was practicing this last night I think I'm close to being able to distinguish the sidebar kick but sometimes other things clicking fool me. Gonna keep at it ill get it.

Whilst this thread is here, anyone know why some biaxials have a gold disc in only one of the stacks?

Those inserts are for master keying.

I see. I thought it was to stop attack with a hair pick. But then realised that you could still perform it.
