Refurbed 5200

Postby WolfSpring » 16 Sep 2009 9:49

I cleaned up and picked 2 of my four found in the sand cut 5200s. I took one today and stripped it completely, using a 7 dollar master 573DPsomething I took it apart too, non key reataining locks are a pain to dissasemble! Anyway. I used the shackle from it for my 5200, then using an existing Key from another american lock, I think an SL-10 or SL-20 I repinned my 5200 to match the key. So for 7 bucks and a little work I have a working 5200 with a cheaper shackle on it. Put it is now much more pick resistant then the master lock, which I could of used the security pins, or used the 5200 locking mechanism in, but I wanted a 5200 body and I learned a lot. I know this isn't a lot for some of you, but I've only been messing with locks for a couple months now so for me this is an accomplishment, and it's more then just picking.

I should have taken some pictures while I was doing all the other stuff, but I wasn't even thinking about that.

Personal victories are the best - even if it doesn't seem much to others. Good job.

American makes some quality padlocks given their price range.

The 5200 series locks are a heck of a lot of fun. They never seem to get old. Out of curiosity what kind of pins were in them when you took them apart, and what kind did you put back in?

Five serated Lower/Key pins 3 serated drivers and two spool drivers(may have been spoorated) I put the same drivers back, changed out two of the serated key pins with two other serated key pins, so same setup. Have a box of old keys took me 7 to find a key that worked with the combination of key pins I have. I've been taking apart a lot of broken locks for parts. If I found an easy way to take apart a Master DG I've got 10 of them that I can pick but they are laminated and my dremel is 110V and the only 110 V is in my carpeted room, I'm not trying to dremel over carpet. The US Army waistes so much money cutting locks, then they leave them on the ground so I go once a week to the container yards and walk the ground and find the lock bodies, clean them, pick them to the best I can, open them up and just started the refurb as a project to learn more about them. I had a 5200 I couln't pick for 2 weeks, finally used a snap pick and got it and after taking it apart one of the springs was so gunked up it was fully compressed and broken, thats why I couldn't pick it. Right now I have an SL-10 that has a good chunk drille out of the plug I'm trying to pick or drill it out right, but it's a pain and I don't have a good place/time to drill right now, will have to wait till DEC when I come home.
