The best cylinder type lock

Postby TheStupid » 18 Sep 2009 23:33

Hi, I am completely new here and do not have much idea about locks, nor do I even know all the proper terminology.

I am trying to design a locking mechanism which is two steel blocks (3.5x3.5x1.74 inch each) locked together. Most parts are done but I am not sure what kind of lock I should use. Something similar to this:

I have to assume the thief would take the lock and have all the time in the world to break it. Now, I do know any lock can be defeated. The one in the picture probably can be defeated with a hand drill in 1 minute. I want to make it so hard that it is not worth the effort. Something like 4-8 hours picking or requires heavy drilling machine to drill through the lock cylinder.

Is it even possible?

Show us what you're trying to lock up, we may have better ideas or existing locks that can help you.

There is no lock that is portable enough to lets say lock a gun trigger, and if the gun is stolen and the thief has unlimited time to hack at it, then the lock would have to be so well engineered that it would end up being more expensive than the item being locked.

So yeah, post a pic of what you're locking up next to a common every day object for size reference please.

A nuclear blast? Really, why would you need that sort of lock in the first place, what is it used to secure? Because I'm sure there are plenty of other holes in your security other than the lock.

And destructive entry is restricted to advanced area only, so I or anyone else can't elaborate on how to break certain locks.
