Master Lock #3

Postby Pick4me » 25 Sep 2009 22:02

I know this sounds pathetic, but I just started picking and got a nice kit from lockpicktools.com. It's the 32 pick set with many picks and wrenches. Well, I cant seem to pick it. I tried raking and single pin picking. I only got it open once. It's either i suck really badly or the lock has something wrong with it.I have 2 of the same kind. I dont currently have the keys, my Dad gave the lock to me with no keys. And correct me if I'm wrong, does it have 4 pins? I know there is 2 types of #3's. Mine has the short metal thing that is on the padlock. (Don't know what it is called.)

1- The chamber moves around and is not secure.(Maybe not a problem.)
2-In one of them, it seems after I set a pin, sometimes it will fall. (I hear the click after I rake it.)
3-I let go of the tension and hear 4 clicks. It's a 4 pin lock, right?
4- Does it turn clockwise or counter-clockwise? I can set more pins clockwise, but 1 will set if I go counter-clockwise.

Thnxs

You are overdoing the tension. The Master #3 picks easily in either direction but only if you use lighter tension. By light tension I mean less turning force than what you would use with a key. Once its picked the plug will move a little and then you apply heavier tension to pop the shackle. 4 clicks means that you are oversetting the pins which is easy to do under heavy tension.

Thanks.
Do you know the best pick for it? I got a whole bunch (like close to 30) out of a Southern Specialties kit.I just broke my W rake though because i got it stuck in a lock earlier and had to pull it out with pliers, and after raking the tip broke off.

They open easily in either direction, as already mentioned. It's usually easier counter clockwise... mine opens clockwise only with top of keyway tension, and you can't rake it that way. If you're raking it, try CCW - if you're SPPing it, try clockwise. As for picks, just use a half diamond or short hook. An S-rake will usually open them very quickly if raking is your thing. The plugs are almost always loose from what I know, and causes problems when it comes to picking. It's not a big deal, you just need to vary the tension up and down a bit more than you normally would.

And yes, it's a 4 pin lock. You heard 4 clicks when you released tension because one or more pins were under/overset. You were probably using too much tension... so this is where the wobbly plug will usually help you out a bit. Just let tension off so one or two pins drop back down, increase tension slightly then pick those pins again to see what happens. I find you need to vary the tension quite a bit with these... I typically start fairly light and work my way up. Pulsating tension is the best bet if you're raking.

Here is mine picked both directions... should give you a bit of determination.

I used bottom of keyway tension for both directions here, but top of keyway is just as good. It's all personal preference, although if you can't get at certain pins then top of keyway is obviously the better choice. Happy picking!
