You said... Oh, for an edit button.

Actually doing it that way is easier than fooling with the covers. You won't slice yourself trying to slide off a tight one either.

Hmm I dont even slide the caps off my few kwiksets i use for practice. I pry them off cause its quicker and I just re pinch the thing back on with vicegrips... Ive repinned these tons and they are all holding on there fine...

If it is just for practice picking I dont see the problem. you may have to squeeze it on there eventually but I have never fount this to be an issue. it can be done with pliars.

they live in my packpack and if that isnt the right condition for popping that thins off idk what is. they are in a pouch withh about 10 or 15 other locks bepending on the day, bouncin around on my walk to work and back

Confederate wrote:Anytime you disturb the factory crimp you run the risk of the bible cap exploding under the right (or wrong, depending on how you look at it) conditions, which could spell disaster.

I would agree 100% if this was something that he was placing back into service as a door lock... but, given that this is something he's just playing around with for picking practice, I think that words like "exploding" and "disaster" might freak the poor guy out.

Confederate is right: with most locks, it's usually preferable to remove the plug and repin the lock that way. (See the repinning advice that I linked to in my earlier post.) If you have slid the spring cover off, though, don't worry... just make sure that it's not been bent when you were removing it: it should fit in securely again when you slide it back in.

If that strip is bent or not properly seated there's a risk that it could pop off later if you push up too hard on the pins... so, in deference to Confederate's point, it would not be a good idea to install that lock back into a door (e.g., to actually secure something like your house) unless you're sure that strip is properly crimped back into place... but for picking practice, you're likely fine.

ok so its fine as long as i don't use that lock for my house or something. man, when confederate said that i wasn't suppose to do that i thought i just wasted 16 bucks for nothing.

The kwikset deadbolt cores I have, the bible cap comes off easily with very little prying pressure, and if it gets a little loose you can bend the flaps of the cap back in and it's as tight as it was to begin with. I've probably repinned then over 20 times. Maybe I'm just lucky, but it's not one of the ones where the cap is a stirip held in by crimps of the bible metal, but more like an inverted U shape that slides over the top and catches on notches on the sides.

We'll see what happens over more times... I wouldn't try that with the ones where the cap is held in by crimps on the top of the bibble though, that would be difficult to recrimp properly.

Okay: I apologize in advance for the stupid question... but, just to check, are you sure that's the direction you turn the key to unlock that knob? (With those locks, one direction locks the knob and the other one unlocks it.)

Which side of the door is it on? Normally you turn the top edge of the key towards the opening of the door (away from the hinge). At least that's the convention in Australia.

*ninja edit* now that you've opened the lock, does it correlate with what I said?

but i wouldnt open all the way as you can see in the picture
i tried it opening toward the away from door and it open fine.

find it weird cause i don't open my practice lock in that direction.

We've all been there. (You should have seen the mess I made the first time I tried to open and repin an interchangeable core cylinder.)

Glad I could help. :)
