Homemade lever padlock pick

Postby magiclockman » 18 Oct 2009 9:29

I have made a few 2 in 1 picks as per snapcarp's excellent guide elsewhere on this site, but the other day I bought at a car boot sale a large steel lever padlock with no key. Granted it's got only 2 levers, but it took me a while to pick with wires as (a) I'm not very skilled with them and (b) the keyway has a central post, making it more tricky to get them in.

So...I adapted snapcarp's design and made a hollow 2 in 1 but it's only hollow for the end 2cm or so. The rest has a solid core to maintain structural strength. It works like a charm. Now to purchase a 5 lever padlock for a real challenge...

If any of you wants to make something similar but can't tell from the pic what to do, fire me a pm

Good stuff!

I'd like to know what you used for the handles on the 2 in 1's. I too followed the guide and have some resonable results, however I am stuck on the handles. I didn't want to use wooden wheels, favouring brass of some kind. I also have limited tooling and haven't found anything suitable yet. Any thoughts?

I can make you some sort of handles from brass or aluminum if you send me the required hole size for the handles and the preferred thickness of the discs :) The dimater will be about 30 mm, depending a little on the material. Price would be something small + postages, contact via PM if interested :)

I use brass discs called plumbers compression blanks. They're available in the UK from Wickes home improvement stores. You just need a drill and some HSS bits. A packet of 2 costs about £2.50 or so. Perfect for the job - took me a while to find something suitable too!
