Mul-T lock pin in pin

Had a play with the multlock pin in pin today first time iv encountered it.

picked it with the dedicated dimple tool no sweat.

then i single picked it just as easilly with a shallow hook and a fair bit of tension. I always imagined these to be quite difficult but i think the design is more of a gimmick than anything.

once youve set the fat outer pins and got the cylinder to shift slightly it doesnt take much to set the inner pins.

just thought id share that anyway

also working on a rake for these made from a keyblank, il post up the results when im done

I always imagined the tolerances to be pretty tight in these... I'm planning to get myself a 5 pin mul-t-lock classic some time in the near future to see what that's like, don't fancy jumping straight into the pin in pins just yet. From what I gather it's fairly easy with the dedicated tool, but to do it with a short hook is pretty impressive! How long does it take you on average?

only took a couple minutes. I did it by inserting the hook right to the back, then apply a little tension and rake it back out along the tops of the pins. repeated a few times til the majority were set, then you can insert your hook sideways and rotate down onto the remaining pins to set them.

the plug turns slightly then its just a case of tickling over all the smaller pins.

I found this a lot easier than the 7 pin garrison ones, main reason being that some of the pins in the garrisons require to be moved a little deeper into the bore which is difficult with a standard hook or half diamond

You make it sound easy... I've seen a couple of guys pick these with standard tools and it takes 5-10 minutes! That being said, you're using a combination of raking and SPP so that would definately speed things up. You might want to clear it up with the mods before posting the rake you said you were making though, I'm pretty sure pin in pin mechanisms are advanced material. At least have a quick check and see if it's ok to discuss them in the public forums. Need to be really careful with this stuff, anything to do with tools or techniques when it comes to high security mechanisms is a definate no-go.

MTL is a great "confidence lock". If you ever have a day where a Schlage Everest or even a 6-pin Kwikset lock gives you a hard time, you can always pick up a MTL lock and pick it in just a couple mins and know that you are just having a bad lockpick day and haven't lost your touch.

I don't know that a tool will be made for the MT5+ because of the sidebar. I think the sidebar pins will just have to be picked like the Assa Twin, V10, and Schlage Primus. It shouldn't make a difference that the pins are free-moving like the Assa Desmo. Of course the standard shear line pins of the MT5+ can probably be picked with a Mul-T-Lock tool.

Does the H&M picks ever get suck in the lock while picking? This is the main reason I've stuck to my Souber dimple set and never bothered to buy those more expensive pick tools from China.

No, it's one of the best features of the H&M when compared to traditional tools.
