Ok, so I got the big 'ol pack of spool pins from ebay. They are LAB .190J spools, and what I've noticed is that one thick end is thicker (taller) than the other. Should the thick end be up or down, or does it matter?
It should be set up like this. With the small end towards the key pin. Locksmitharmy might be correct about it being difficult the other way. But that would only be true if it was over a shallow cut, since otherwise it would only act as a regular driver pin.
The simple way to test if it will have the desired spooled effect, is to have the keyed up plug in your hands (without a key in it). Then put the driver pin on top of the key pin and make sure that the spooled section is crossing the shear line at the resting position.

I always wonder the same thing,which way the pin should go like FarmerFreak said i got it that way sometimes with the small end towards the key pin but i been getting a couples of medeco cylinder locks with spool pins facing the other way.I was thinking they only go one way it look like they can go either way.
