Dismantling a schlage (non-locking) door handle

Postby curiousaboutlocks » 20 Nov 2009 18:04

Hi this is a non-locking (passage) door handle which i can't for the life of me figure out how to take apart. I pressed a pencil into the hole to remove the two handles and roses, I pried off the two metal coverings/shells with a screwdriver, I unscrewed the screws on the very top and bottom (now there are two clear small holes running through the door) as well as those on the latch, I pried off the second metal coverings, took out the springs running all the way around, but I still can't remove the lock. I am confronted with a barrel, which I can see straight through, and at the base of the barrel on each side, there are screw-like grooves on a cylindrical barrel (sort of hexagonal not cylindrical since ends of circle are cut off) and this perhaps seems to be preventing removal. I've tried prying the whole unit off to see if it's free yet, but to no avail. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

You need to unscrew the castle nut. It is that circular nut around the center shaft with the four notches in it.

Schlage makes a special tool for it. They come with a new grade 1 Schlage (the expensive heavy duty ones). You may be able to get one from a local locksmith.

To get this to unscrew you can probably do it with two screw drivers. But you will need to put the other screws back in and tighten them up really really tight. This is done to release the tension on the castle nut. Otherwise you will probably be there all day trying to get that nut loose.

A quick google image search and I came up with these pictures.
They aren't pictures of the Schlage castle nut and the Schlage tool. But they are very close and will give you a very good idea of what you are up against.

Just put a small screwdriver into one of the notches, at about a 45 degree angle and tap it counter-clockwise until it is loose enough to remove by hand. You shouldn't have removed the springs - they are the lever return springs, no need to remove them to get the lock apart.

If you have them put the spring cage screws and tighten to release pressure on the nut, should make it easier to use a screwdriver if needed.
If you need more info. :D
