DIY my first "Bogota" tip out of jigsaw blade

I live in city without sweeper bristles available on streets (darn nylon bristles )

..so I must improvise (as most DIY-ers).
Today afternoon I had to cut some flooring laminate and suddenly I have seen one hidden pick exactly in my
jigsaw blade. (BTW which was already a bit blunt ..soo .. )

This is my first "bogota" type pick.
Tools used:
1. electric grinder - just to remove teeth from jigsaw blade - to save metal file a bit.
2. Little triangle file to make centering notch for later work with round file.
3. Round Chainsaw file - most of "rough job" done with this one
4. One little round file and one little flat/oval file to finish
5. Rotating/vibrating sander to sand sides of pick (not necessary but I like to make it a bit slimmer and prepare for fine sanding)
6. Fine grade sanding paper (I had have grade 500 at hand .. may be used even finer for high gloss finish)

This is beautiful work. I really need to get myself a grinder... if I could make picks like that I'd be very happy indeed.

Hi staiper, welcome to the forum. You did a very good job, I like this bogota. I fear it's too thick to work in euro-cylinders but in bigger locks it should work great. What's the thickness of the tip?
You could make a sort of handle for better comfort. How about bending the first 2cm of the pick "raimundo stile"? Try to bend another blade so you can check if it snaps without ruining your pick.

Hello mates,

I have spent around 2hours from finding jigsaw blade to finished pick .. (also taking photos break my work-flow a bit ) ..

Thickness .. this saw blade is thick exactly 1mm on its own (I have measured few used or spares I have in jigsaw-toolbox and found them in few thick/sizes from 0.9mm to 1.3mm) -- if someone planing to do this lime me choose one of slimmer ones.

After side-sanding (with rotating/vibrating sanding machine) my pick is 0.8mm thick which seems to be OK for "euro locks" ( I am in euro-locks zone with slimmer keyholes and pins on down side too )

I have planned to make another one just a little bit smaller (a bit "lower" tips and spacing) out of 0.9mm blade and when finished it will be ~0.7mm

BTW.. since now I have no experience with "bogotas" so any practical advice about "ideal" tip spacing and height for most euro type locks is welcome.

Today I made one smaller out of windshield wiper insert (2.5mm height 0.8mm thickness)
It is really good for smaller padlocks.. but still very hard for standard euro door lock (opened one of five which I have tried)...

Finally I am happy.. now I have various bogotas for various sized locks.

First one (made out of jigsaw blade is super for a bit larger keyholes - like "Master" padlocks and older 5 pin dorlocks)

Second one (made out of windshield wiper insert) seems to have a bit too tight peak to peak spacing for
doorlocks but do the job for smaler locks-padlocks.

For the end I have made twisted pair - standard "Bogota" (with a bit increased peak to peak span than first windshield wiper insert attempt) and "Monserate-fore") which nice for standard doorlocks I have here.

Even opened one padlock easily (5 pin - cheap chinesse but which was nightmare for me for SSP - difficult pin configuration )

Chainsaw 5mm file (have to buy one a bit larger) , set of needle files .. + larger flat file

I use little triangular file to mark positions for notches/valleys, than most of job on "working side" of pick
is done with chainsaw file and than finished with little flat/oval needle file.

Than udercuts marked again with triangular needle file and than widen with flat/oval and round needle file.
When tip is almost roughly finished I remove excess of material from bottom side (from "handle" to tip) with larger flat file and finish with small needle flat file.
When it is done I do just a bit more of fine filing to round-up all before fine sanding
(however I did not finished mine to max smooth-rounded finish because I made them just for quick test)

It's clear that you have very good manual skills: your sets are excellent!

Wiper inserts are thinner than the saw blade you started with, and they do work better. I use bristles that are a lot thinner, I guess 0.4 mm. Anyway 0.8 mm is ok.

..just to back on initial jigsaw blade bogota.

I have filed it a bit more to make tip even a bit thinner (verticaly) + smoothed all surfaces and slightly rounded all edges on rake working-tip and it really works nice for euro door locks. Minute before opened little ABUS padlock (nothing extreme - 4 pin No 85/30 - with mushroom pin) funny easy (5 seconds of "tight" jigling)

Now tip-to-tip span is 6mm and overall (humps and tips) tip height is 2.9 (vertical)

I can use it on its own but would be much more comfortable when make some quality handle (will see .. stainless or aluminum) so I can make few more picks out of similar jigsaw blades an than have nice set of replaceable pick-tips


Raimundo what are tip basic dimensions of your original (or tweaked design ) ? ..I would like to try to "clone" one to try on euro cylinders.
..If I follow "rule" (found that noted somewhere on forum) of 1. pin on tip , 2. pin in valley , 3.pin on tip... it will dictate me pin-to-pin span of at least 7mm for most locks..?!

meanwhile I have find another blunted jigsaw blade in tool box and (of course) made
another one of "Bogota" family; jigsaw blade Monserate fore.
Now I have to do a bit polishing .. pictuers up when finished.

Eh .. I forget that I have not uploaded "finished" ones. They nice fit in a handle of one of my xacto knifes and than they give that "Pro" feeling in use .. however I can work with them even without handle (not so comfortable .. bot .. I can )
