Know what would be really funny? If he posted another thread because he didn't get the right answer here.

Maybe you didn't turn it all the way. Keep turning it and it might just turn. Typically the bolt requires a little more force.

thanks for the info, but the problem remains, when i use the key for this lock, the maximum position with deadbolt moved is .....9 o'clock position... wont go any further,, same position i end up at with pick, only the deadbolt dosent move

Post a picture of the tail piece and the back of the lock itself.

Defiant is a kwikset knockoff, I find these mostly in subdivisions. Is there any chance it is construction keyed? There could be a wafer or a ball stuck, also I have seen "C" clips fall off of the back of these. That could cause problems.

More than likely the bolt itself is stuck. Make sure there is no opening or closing pressure on the bolt and keep trying the key. Make sure the door is not sagging at the hinges and applying pressure on the bottom of the bolt. Also try applying turning pressure and bump the door with a deadblow hammer.

Any spray lube through the keyhole will flow into the plug retaining cap and lube the floating tailpiece also.

There is no common reason why the plug would stop at 90 degrees by itself.

Now that you provided more information:

Try picking it in the opposite direction, if the tension wrench does not give enough turning pressure use a small flat screwdriver in its place once it’s picked.

The tip of the key could be required to complete the connection with the tailpiece. This is quite common on some Weiser knobs as the key pushes in a connection. The cylinder will turn and nothing will happen.

To answer this question completely, you will need to remove the deadbolt and look at the back while using the key.

We are getting curious now.
