About keys profiles

Hi guys,
I'm trying to start in this business and I have some question.
Many locksmiths told me that I can't run it, that I need at least 3 years in a locksmithing company.

They told me that I won't be able to recognize the right key for a duplication, that there is hundreds of shaps.

Is there a way that can help me to make difference between the keys.

There are a lot more than hundreds of different key profiles. Thousands is more like it.

But , as long as there is a brand name on the key , identifing it is little more than looking it up in the key blank catalogue. After a while , you'll get to know the most common blanks in your area. So experience does count , but 3 years is a little over the top.

Silca has a device called 'Optika' , it scans the key profile and shows you what blank to use. That really helps when there is no brand name on the key.
