I can't believe you admitted to seeing that movie just to let us know there is lockpicking in it......................

I watched it to see An.gel.na Jo.lie walking around in her underwear. Good flick.

I don't know if it's been mentioned in this thread yet since I don't read it regularly, but I caught a small part of _Madagascar_ this morning while my son was watching it, and apparently one of the penguins picks a lock with a single paperclip. I told him that was impossible and that the penguin should have at least had another paperclip to use as a wrench. Probably ruined the rest of the movie for him.

I just caught The General's Daughter on TV the other day and saw John Travolta picking a lock. Also, in some movie with J-Lo as a woman trying to kill her abusive husband, the aforementioned heroine picks her way into her hubby's place, just to hide in his rafters all night and the next day to assassinate him.

I often thought about this problem when I first got into picking locks years ago. My first set was a 32 piece which I kept at my house instead of my truck because I was afraid of being thought a theif. I am now no longer worried seeing how I am a firefighter and have proper I.D. to prove this. As an emergency worker I am able by law to carry such items on me and in my vehicle in the state where I live. Perhaps you could become a volunteer firefighter and you too could no longer worry about this problem. Just a thought. Anywho that's my two cents on this conversation.[/quote]


Or move to a state (country) that picks are legal in. I live in Indiana in the USA and I can legally carry lockpicks with me anywhere I go without getting in any trouble. (I assume if I went to an airport or something like that then they might)

On an episode of Law & Order where women were being hog tied, their mouths glued with superglue and then raped and killed by an intruder, the cops initially arrested a suspect who matched the description in the neighborhood who they found had picks on him, they showed the set (looked like Southord or HPC fold out case) as they dug it out of his clothes.

Turns out he was just a burgular, and the real killer was an airline employee who would return lost luggage to women's homes and as he brought the luggage into their home, they'd let him in and he would kill them.

Haven't seen the movie "The Collector" as yet to be released, another movie set in the Saw horror genre. However, during the previews you get a good view of a combination of a saw rake and what looks like a second tool maybe a tenson wrench. The saw rake looks like its inserted upside down in relation to the wrench. Could be wrong. But, more to the point, lockpicks have made it to movie preivews.

The "wrench" appears to be a half (?) diamond pick. Also I believe that the rake is upside down

Not sure if it's been mentioned here yet, but my gf was watching a movie called "Enough" last night, with jennifer lopez in it. There's a scene where she picks a lock, so of course she called me over to show me and I was surprised to see that she actually raked a little bit before turning the plug. Most times I see picking in movies, the plug isn't turned, so I was fairly impressed. Only thing is, she turned it 180 then back again instead of the whole way around - but in saying that, it was a knobturn (which we don't really have over here), so it may have been accurate for all I know.

Yeah locks in doorknobs we just turn them to unlock or lock then turn it back to vertical.

Movies are great they make lock picking look like a snap. bam ten your in .. tension wrench or not. just like how they show firearm (suppressor) silencers sound hollywood quiet pfffft. sooo quiet you cant even hear it. LOL.. but in reality its kinda loud.

However some locks can be picked without tension wrench like cheap wafer locks.

Anyone watch the show "Burn Notice?" It's on USA Network. Pretty good show actually, kinda reminds me of MacGuyver (Loved that show). The main character is a burned spy who is trapped in Miami by his handlers and is trying to figure out who burned him all the while helping people with their personal problems using his skills as a spy.

Anywho, I've seen many time in the show people picking locks and it seems that they have done their research on it. A tension wrench is always used and one time Bruce Campbell's charachter (yes, Ash from Army of Darkness is it this show), was having trouble picking a lock and was talking about it being some "9 pin" super lock.

It's definately a show worth checking out.

Of course some of that premise of that show is bushit. The statement that they leave people to get by in some place that they cannot leave, how would you make him stay, they couldn't control phillip agee, and they don't do this, an asset that is burned will always find new friends and it may not be your friend.
Secondly, the job sucks, you betray the people you befriend and use their lives up in your stupid games. Once out of this job, more people would not want it back and they can now get jobs at much greater salary working in the private sector selling the mystique of 'ex spook'.
Its like the character is trying to rejoin a group that is his enemy. They do get some things right and it is entertaining if you have that willing suspension of disbelief that it requires

In V (the series from the 80's) Mr Cheng (right hand man of Nathan Bates) picks his way into Julies apartment. Sadly, we only see him with a smug grin on his face as he puts the lockpicks away - at least it includes a tension wrench).

In Castle, they had an episode (Season 1, "Home is Where The Heart Stops") that involved a good amount of dialog re locks. Specifically, part of the plot is finding the maker of a special bump key for a "high end European lock." Even briefly mention how bump keys work.

Only... if you look closely, it's a lever lock.

Well, on the Sanctuary ep on Friday, one of the main characters was picking a lock. He used a manual pickgun and actually used a tension wrench! Nice touch for tv/hollywood
