Your key should look like the one pictured below. The depth of the cuts and the spacing are dependent on the manufacturer or the lock you are working with. You will need to cut the key to the lowest possible cut for the manufacturer, the cuts will need to be spaced properly according to the manufacturer, and the width of the cut needs to be the proper width according to the manufacturer. You can find some space and depth information online. Use that information along with a dial caliper to measure out your spaces for your cuts and then to measure the depth of your cut.
