Master Keying binding

Postby npdaniels » 11 Jan 2010 10:04

Morning all:

Just a quick question on Master keying.

When you start noticing binding with a master keyed cylinder, is the more common problem key ware or pin ware, or a combination of both?

Is the common resolution to this problem repining or new key by code?

Thanks

It can be a miscut depth on the key, but most likely in the combination stack of bottom/master pins. Get out your caliper and measure the key and the pins.

Thanks ElAbogado

I believe cylinder is keyed properly, the pins are slightly warn and the key that was provided also is warn. Could it be because it’s an aftermarket Ilco cylinder?

very likely a problem with original specs on an aftermarket cylinder. If you adjust the pin stack height, add or subtract from the bottom pin only, not the master pins. If that's not it, then without examining the cylinder, I really can't say.

Don't put #1 master pins in the #1 binding. They wear out faster due to all 5 or 6 peaks sliding across.
