306 remote key issue

Postby mapplet » 19 Jan 2010 12:50

Hello all,

OK,Im a newbie to this site so forgive me if my posts been covered at length before or maybe is in the wrong area - i did search but came up with some relevant, but not exactly applicable info.. hence this post.

I bought a 306 (facelift, W/2000, HDi) about 3 years ago and knew this day might come evetually.. yep, I only got one (remote) key: not too bad, but while the remote works for the locking and the ignition barrel, it doesnt work the doors manually: mustve been punch-lock broken into at some point I can only figure (can you see whats coming?). Anyway, the remote has now randomly stopped working, and for no real reason as far as I can tell (luckily I have access to another car!). Yep, I did the obvious and swapped battery, but to no joy. All I want to know is my options, or rather whats the best solution (and obviously how much is it going to cost me) cos this is how I currently see it..

Options as I see them:
1). break a rear quarter window to gain access to interior, drive it to nearest garage/scrap yard to get new locking system fitted, then auto glass seller/scrap yard.
2). Ring locksmith to get into car to gain access to interior, drive it to nearest garage/scrap yard to get new locking system fitted.
3). Simply cut my losses and scrap it, as its all going to be too costly
4). Other??

All thoughts, additional options and comments welcome!

Thanks ;)

ps. I only really ask the cost as Its almost a given that it probably WONT pass its next MOT due in about 3 months (the rear torsion bar bearings are squeaky knackered and the replacement is more than the cars value in money - too much play then its a fail), but everywhere else its mechanically sound and in tip-top condition (engine/box/tyres/half leather interior etc). So, Im wondering whether its worth the cost that I presume a new window (after breaking an entry point)/locksmith and a whole new remote locking system will cost me..

Locksmith answer- and he may even be able to service your door locks (make them work) for a small fee- may cost a bit more than a mechanic, but quite a bit less than a broken window, mechanic repair on the ignition and door locks, and your time running around to other shops, etc...
