wafer blocking mechanism

This is along the lines of my previous "commit and authenticate" idea. Basically, with any key (or even no key) inserted the plug can rotate a tiny bit, and the sidebar locks the wafer in place. With the wafer blocked in this way it is not possible to manipulate the lock. Only three bitting depths are available here. The false gates up top are not really necessary but may help prevent cracking this the way that safes are cracked, by measuring plug travel (the false gates should all be cut to random widths). The extra slots on the sleeve allow the key to be removed in three different positions as may be desirable for instance in the case of a keyswitch, but of course this is optional.

After I had drawn the picture I realized that it may be better to have a sidebar on each side rather than having both prongs on the same side. In that setup the blocking gates (currently on bottom) would be on the left and the authentication gates (currently up top) would be on the right. This would save vertical space or allow more bitting depths as well as allowing a wider pin. The "roof" on top of the plug is just there to allow the thing to be taken apart.

The "V" extrusion of the sidebar, would make it read easily and would wear quickly, I think. Consider no "V".

Doublesided, would make the keyway very thin.

False cuts is a good idea, but this looks like it would be expensive to produce and if you chose to use diecast materials, it would wear very quickly and probably pick quickly too.

This concept looks eerily similar to an Assa twin 6000 sidebar setup.

The only real difference I see is that you are using two posts on the sidebar instead of one.

Congratulations, you have come up with a novel idea. I nearly dropped my teeth when I saw it though because I have been working on something quite similar. I was just trying to put some finishing idea changes in place before I showed it. I will start a new thread with this alternate idea. Man, I hate getting bumped like that!

I'd like to mention though... I wanted to block the pins in order to prevent manipulation before the top sidebar became active. Then, I thought "hey, might as well throw some false gates up there as well." After drawing the picture up and posting it I'm now thinking that perhaps having the false gates up top completely eliminates the need for the bottom sidebar, since they basically accomplish the same thing. Perhaps the one redeeming aspect of the lower sidebar is that it increases the distance the plug must be rotated between trying a combination and then going back to alter the pin positions. The greater the rotation involved between those two actions the harder it would be to do it in a controlled fashion.

It can keep the pins both top and bottom and allow the sidebar to move in only when both are at a slot and not a false gate. That way either could be binding at a false gate and thus confuse the picker.
