Newbie. Tension Question

Postby bambiboy » 20 Feb 2010 7:47

Hi to everyone. I am a newbie to 101 and a newbie to my new hobby spp. I hope someone can help. I have noticed if you put turning pressure on a key as you put it in the barrel of a lock and all the way in, even though it is the correct key it will not turn until you take a bit of pressure off the key, it clicks and then it will turn. I hope that made sense. What is confusing me is if you put tension on a lock with the tension tool and you proceed to SPP does this mean you will have the same problem with the barrel not turning even though all the pins are set. If this doesnt make sense i will try and explain in better detail. Once again hello to everyone and i look forward to speaking to you in the future. All the best, Bambiboy. :D
PS. I will put my questions in the correct part of the forums in future, i just thought it would be easier this time as i wanted to say hi to everyone.

Hi, and welcome to LP101!
When you tension a lock, and insert a key, the pins over set.
The high parts of your key push the pins too far up, and with tension, they stick there.
When you release tension, the pins drop down on the key, and now you can turn and open the lock.
When picking a lock this doesn´t happen unless you overset a pin by pushing it too far. In this case it feels like no pin is binding, and you can´t pick the lock. If you release tension a bit, you can hear the pin dropping down, and you can go on picking..
Hope this helps.
