I picked up one of these "contractor grade", "maximum security", "pick resistant" pad locks the other day. Who has gotten one open yet? I'm slowly progressing on it little by little. A little info on it:

6 cylinders, keyed for 5
5 spool top pins
rekeyable

Best I can get so far is setting 2 pins, and then then the 3rd will false set where it'll turn too much on the spool pin, where I try to loosen up on the tension, and the other set pins drop first :D

Guess thats not bad for now.

I think it is a huge milestone indeed when you learn to manipulate security pins consistantly. It's one of those things that seems impossible for a while, and after you learn to do it consistantly you wonder how it could have defeated you before. Probably because it's a lot of muscle memory that needs to be learned. I'm not sure if i'm helping you at all or answering your question but I just thought i'de throw that out there.

Sounds to me like the amount of extra tention you place on the wrench between setting the 2nd pin and attempting the 3rd needs to be reduced. it's not easy, but if you think that you are virtually reducing all the tention for pins 1 and 2 to reset, you should reduced the tention to just before that point before attempting the 3rd.

It's a very slow process, but until you get the feeling for it, as exodus said, its probably the best way.

Also are you sure none of the other pins will set before the one you are attempting as the 3rd, I am guessing you have of course tried the full range of the remaining pins.

Thanks for the input.

I do feel myself slowly "feeling" more things going on inside the lock as the time go by (practicing). I'll get there, it's all about developing that feel.
