Hello everyone (of all abilities and moral idealisms), it was not the welcome i expected but i'm sure there was no anisoity meant. To confirm i agree it's good to be Moderated by those with the same value set and ethics as i (although i feel the cognative prejudise of my first 'Hi', to be a some what of a preconceived judgement and delivered in an unreasonable negative attitude, given the honourable stance that my question came from), but i look forward to sharing my knowledge without any preconceived rational influence, nor haboring any ill feelings or discrimination towards and any new found friends of this fellowship called "Locksmithing"
Regards from the UK

I started out of necessity. We had some shady characters who were renting at our church. We finally got rid of them, but they had keys. Our church had no money, so I figured out how to rekey locks. Some 40 or 50 locks later, I'm pretty good at it. Over time some of the keys were lost. I had my one homemade pick to go with my one homemade torsion wrench. They actually got the job done.

Hey there. My name's Eric and I've recently become fascinated with this hobby. I'm a student at the University of Nebraska studying psychology and I have a love for pretty much everything - trendy or odd. I happily stumbled upon this site a couple years back when my friend and I were going to try to pick up this hobby together, but it didn't fall through. Now, a year or so later I have obtained my first pick set, opened a number of locks I don't know the brand name of, and am looking for much more.
I'm hoping my stay here is pleasant as I have only just begun. I love the site so far - the ethics, the layout, the friendliness of the people, and the wealth of information. Looking forward to getting to know you folks better!

Hey everyone! I'm Mike and I currently live in Heidelberg, Germany. I'm pretty new to lockpicking but I've been improving steadily since getting back from Afghanistan. I'm looking forward to getting better at picking locks and getting to know you all. Feel free to PM, especially if you happen to be in good old Deutschland.

Hey, Klaiviel here from Milwaukee, WI soon to be Chicago, IL (moving for work) and I am very excited about becoming a member of this forum. This all started about 2 weeks ago when I was researching high security deadbolts for my new apartment. My search led me here and after doing some reading here, being the diy type that I am, I decided that I needed to test some of these deadbolt manufacturers claims. So I went out and bought a $9 Kwikset deadbolt fashioned a short hook and torsion wrench out of windshield wiper inserts using a hand file and pliers and went to work... and the lock opened in no more than 20 seconds... and after that happened, I have been hooked. So as I said earlier I am very excited to be joining this community and I look forward to working with all of you in the future.

I'm Fred. Started picking locks because i thought it'd be cool to know how to do, and the more i learned, the more i knew that i knew nothing. i'm often trying to think outside the box, both on the security and circumvention sides.

.....double-post. my bad. just wanted to say that i'm also hardcore into the DIY stuff. in fact, i've never bought a pick, and i'm constantly making a pick for a certain lock, and then modifying it to work a larger variety of similar locks, focusing on the trade-off between specialty and ease of use.

Well, if you've shimmed a bit and bumped a bit, it's good you got that out of your system. It's time to pick up the picks :) There are a lot of great stickies on the site. Beginner picking exercises, cylinder maintenance and disassembly so you can alter the bitting of your lock and add security pins, etc. Security pin picking instruction. Just go through the general & sub forums that interest you and read the stickies at the top. Once you've done that, use google's site-specific search feature to dig up other info you might be interested in. Feel free to drop in on active threads and add your 2 cents as well.
