I need help picking

Postby ShadowPick » 31 Aug 2004 16:22

I have a good lock picking set I brought not to long ago, and I also have a book named "Serects to Lock Picking". I just can't pick my front door. I use a diamond pick and a tension wrench. I would like to know if anyone has any sercrets that I don't know or that could help me. One more thing my wrench seems weak.

Thank you,

Don't feel bad. If anyone who bought picks and a book could pick locks right off the bat it would defeat the purpose now wouldn't it. Each lock has its own "personality." Why don't you post the brand of lock it is so that we can provide more specific help.
The general tips I give out on these kind of questions are to try using less tension, and don't be forceful with the pins.

Schlage is a little vague yet, but i'll venture a guess. These locks I find tend to vary in picking difficulty pretty vastly. Sometimes it is ver obvious when a pin is set because it'll click into place with a high tension sound. Other times it's only a mushy feeling.
The locks probably have 5 pins, I doubt it would have any security pins in it either.

My best advice to you is simply to keep at it. It's the best way to learn. Try single pin picking it, try using a short hook or half diamond.

As the lock on your front door is one that is used daily, perhaps you'd be better off getting a couple of practice locks so you don't bugg.. um, mess up this lock. The general lock selection for starting out are the Master #3 padlock and something like a Kwikset key in knob lock...don't let Kwikset's recent advertising campaign fool you, the Schlage you have on your door is a step above.
Image If it ain't broke.....pull it down and see how it works anyway!

Yeah, I was thinking about getting a lock because my dad says if I break the lock I have to pay for it. So do you have a website I can go to buy it? Or do you have any?

Uhm, schlage can be very hard for a beginner

I have a $20 schlage door deadbolt package, it has 5 pins, of which 4 are spools. It is also manufactured with surprisingly tight tolerances.

yes - I have some secrets that you don't know....which ones would you
like?

that would be a "he" as in "helpfull" "hehe" would then represent a small
chuckle rather than an outright laugh.... teeheeheeheehee... would be a
girly sort of laugh.. but really the internet is gender free mostly.

so there: heeheeheehehehahahahahaaaahaaMUAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

ok, on a more serious note:

you are most likely using way too much tension - you mentioned that you
can't pick your front door - try using a whole heap less tension - imagine
the amount of force you'd use to turn the key itself - ok, got that? this is
the absolute maximum amount of tension that you need to open the
lock... use less than that - sometimes just resting one finger on the
wrench is more than enough..

keep practicing and happy pickings!

Don't worry about the ride problem I found a #3 padlock in my basement and have successfully picked it twice.

Thanks for the advice on what lock to try to pick.

What kind of serects should I need, WhiteHat?

well, I shouldn't really tell you because then it wouldn't be secret.....
:D

... seriously - I was just teasing. normaly I'm fairly helpfull... - you'll find
everything you need on this site if you lurk for a bit and do quite a bit of
reading and searching.

I think newbie teasing should be an olympic sport - points would
be awarded for wit, executing sarcasm without offending and the number
of posts before the newbie catches on.
