UPVC door security help

Can anyone help me or give me some guidance, My mother in law broke the mechanisum in her UPVC door the other day, it was quite late so no chance of buying a new lock that day. She asked me if I could secure it temporarily until the next day, well I did I suppose, I used a couple of sash jammers which are not as strong as a proper lock but it was all I could come up with.

Has anyone got a better way in which I could have made the door more secure bearing in mind it was to late to buy a new lock and the mechanisum was completly smashed in side and would not lock at all and I did not want to call a proper locksmith out due to the costs.

they wasent much you could do if you didnt wunt to pay for your mother in laws safety.

Lockset or deadbolt? If it was a deadbolt, you could have disconnected the tailpiece from the back of the cylinder and left is in the thumb turn. If the lockset was broken and the latch wouldn't hold the door closed, there isn't much you could do short of boarding the door.

just to say a locksmith dosent rip any one off.like i always say.say he charged you 100 dollars,its 80 for knowing how to do it and 20 for doing it.
and from your intro post,im sure you will soon find out why locksmiths charge so much.

Locksmiths know the correct way to do things, and thats what the customer pays for. We end up having to go to lots of jobs where the customer tried to "do it themselves".

This reminds me of a great bumper sticker I saw on the back of a white van.

Wiring is not a hobby, hire a licensed electrician. In the middle of the decal was a IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) union logo. I think that's great advice to any one who likes to DIY.

multi point locks can be very expensive even at trade price in fact a yale i fitted a few weeks back cost me £85 at trade price, then the call out to open the door in the first place which... then cost of fitting of the lock properly and all the travelling in between/

locksmiths have to make a profit and remember 20-40% then goes in tax...

I always recommend the same solution when a customer thinks theyre being swindled.... and that buy a wooden door
