Not sure what the conversion rate is but I was told about 2 to1. Pippin files are $39 to $65 here in the US and then add freight.

IMO, Grobet - Pippen files 6" long with a #2 cut work best.

The files in the thread posted are not pippin files they are round impressioning files. The difference is one is round and a pippin file is oval. It allows you to file deeper without making the cut wider.

The pippin style file also allows the forming of the 'ramps' between the spacings of the key cuts so that the key can easily navigate the tumblers in the keyway.

Im with jos, I use rat-tail files, usually in a fourth cut if possible,

I have a fifth cut grobet swiss file that I have used for 20 years cutting steel mostly, use it for slipping picks im making to round the 90 degree edges by using a slipping stroke along the edge, but now its nearly worn out, (GRobet, makes the best, any other file would not have lasted this long)
and I would like to get a replacement, but havent found one yet,
I bougth this one at a jeweler supply house, that place is gone now. I want another eight or ten inch Grobet fifth cut rat-tail and haven't been able to locate one,
fifth cut may be something that they don't make any more, but somewhere some supply house has one on the shelf left over from the last millenium.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

you must have had the wrong cut. get one that is too fine a cut and you will be there all day. A coarse file will take a key down 1 depth per swipe. American padlock start to finish takes me no more than 10 minutes to impression.

At the moment any abus which takes me longer than three minutes feels like a failure. So changing files two weeks before the German championships doesn't sounds wise.

hi guys i'm new on here but been alockie some 20 odd years and still learning,
i've recently opened a training school and taught quite a few students only on a one to one basis, the way i was taught, i have gone back with a lot of things that i have not used for many years like impressioning, the easiest way i find is to use brass blanks so it is easier to see the markings, my question is has anybody got any tips on using steel blanks as it is hard getting brass for some locks, any help would be appreciated
thanks

I'm not an expert in impressioning but I had fun making some keys this way, so I'll offer you my 0.02 € :)

Sometimes with steel blanks you'll get some nice brass marks: the pins are somewhat eroded by the steel and left some material on the blank. These yellow marks are even easier to be seen than the small uncoloured ones left on soft blanks.

Cheers :)
