SFIC Turning Tool

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

SFIC Turning Tool

Postby Raymond » 31 May 2010 17:07

I decided to make a Best style core-removal turning tool specifically to fit the E keyway. Because the E keyway is wider than others at the bottom thin tools tend to roll over and require an extra pick or toothpick to hold them straight.

I used a cut off piece of an electrician’s fish tape. It is .125” by .063”. I filed an angle on the top half and flattened the bottom until it would just barely fit into the keyway. It is a tight fit. I then marked the tool through the holes of a core with a fine tip marker. I then filed away the metal between the marks. I then cleaned off the sharp edges.

It now fits into the keyway easily. Due to the thickness, it does not roll over when applying clockwise turning pressure and turns full force on the control sleeve.

I'm impressed, looks well done.
The BiLock isn't the first bump proof pin tumbler because it isn't a pin tumbler.
And it's called a shear line, not a "sheerline".

Not quite sure if this is the right spot to post such thoughts, but I was wondering:

Isn't it possible to file a bit off the bottom of a bump key that fits the SFIC keyway, and then use one of these special tension tools in conjunction with the bump key to quickly remove cylinders?
I was thinking pick gun, but these do tend to be heavily warded.

The biggest problem with trying to use a bump key on an SFIC lock is that it has no shoulder at the bow. The tip of the key stops in contact with the plug retainer. Bumping against the plug retainer will break off the lip from the plug. This renders the core unusable.

However, applying your idea to a key that has been shortened so that the bow stops at the face of the plug just might work.

it took me forever to comprehend what you meant here but, now that I understand that fish tape is actually a bit of metal used to pull wire, I understand completely. Good job!

Perhaps I am being particularly dense today but could you not *make* a shoulder for said bump key? A bit of hot glue, or even a hard polyurethane collar secured to the bow of the key?
