maglight case

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Sure.

Judging by my maglite and my electrical engineering courses what they are doing is taking out hte batteries and bulb and then replacing the bulb with a SuperBrite LED (I'm using a StarBurst, 20 lumens and bright blue) you then take a couple of button cell batteries (i'm using 3 volt batteries taken from a battery powered glow stick). Now this is where I Got lost but I figured it out on my own. I took a thin piece of metal and bent it so i could use it to push the batteries against the top of the cylinder and then ran the metal down the side of the cylinder and bent it so it touches the spring that is on the screw in bottom and then it functions just like a normal maglite, with room for you picks.

I came up with that on the fly looking through my electrical parts case, I'm trying it right nowbut its midnight and i'm trying not to wake people up and bend the only strip of metal i have.

Oh and Once I bodge this thing together i'll post pics

Let me elaborate it works but I cant get it to close cus of hte piece of metal not being bent right. so its not done but there is room for stuff in it
lots of stuff. maybe even enough room for a good bit of detcord for those pesky locks.

so the peice of metal attaches the batteries to the coil in the back, aswell as keeps them held down?

Just another thought, it would be possible to make some sort of padded insert to keep the picks from rattling around.. There really is quite a lot more room than I thought inside a maglite! I have been thinking about this since before the original thread, but I have not made it yet...

It would be nice if someone manufactured a kit to do this in the future. A machined tube/pick holder that slides right into the maglite, and a little adapter to put the LED in the front. You could just poke the LED in, but I haven't tried it yet and I don't know if it fits just perfect or not. (It probably fits right in, though) The tube could hold some watch style batteries like mentioned before and a small plate or something could mate with the spring in the tailpiece of the flashlight requiring zero modification.

hehe If dimes fit in there, you could even store some change, just in case you need to call a locksmith! :D :D

I think I will try the bent metal idea, though! Making it work before trying to improve it sure does help! :)

Note: using this to actually conceal picks from law enforcement in places where you cannot have picks probably isn't a good idea because police in many areas check flashlights for controlled substances and weapons. (Not to give any of you ideas, hehe) In areas where you can legally carry picks, having them concealed in such a way may help the court to prove intent and get you into trouble anyway. Keeping a practice lock cylinder in your pocket may help you to prove that it is just a hobby and you have no criminal intent, but be careful.

With that out of the way, I think the maglite case is a great idea! You never know when you'll need a flashlight!

...also, A red filter helps you keep good night vision, maybe a red LED would work that way as well. :)

Hmmm... I need more scrap metal, LEDs and batteries.. :)

Ok, this sounds intriguing. I would like to check out the original post but I’m having trouble finding it using the search function on this forum. Could someone direct me to it please?

Here's where I think I originally saw the idea! I remember thinking, hey I was just thinking of that the other day and here it is! :)

DukeMurmer brings up the idea about half way through the posts. :) So we are really just elaborating on his thoughts! :)

Oh! It took a lot of searching for me to find that, but when I did, I used the keyword LED. Just FYI. :) Searching works in mysterious ways sometimes. That was a hard one, whew! :)

Thank you sir. I tried tones of different keywords. Didn’t think of LED though. The thing that gets me the most about this search function is every time I click the back button I get a “Page Expired” message. Frustrating…

With regards to the LED plugging right into the existing plugs right out of the pack isn't really how it is for me I had to bend and then cut down to size the legs of the LED. It really depends on what LED size you get.

As for a kit I'm gonna see what I can come up with that is cheap and shippable via a regular envelope through the regular mail. I think I've figured it out but I'm still toying with it.

Thank you for clarifying about the LED! After a quick glance I also noticed that the hole in the silver dome shaped piece may need to be enlarged slightly.. ...again depending on the LED. :)

Speaking of LED, when the project is done you could replace the spare bulb that is stored in the tailpiece under the spring, with a spare LED instead! :)

It would be cool to somehow make a battery holder for the watch batteries and have a tube as a spacer. The battery holder could have a spring mounted in some way as to replace the function of the spring in the tailpiece so the flashlight would still work the exact same way.

a metal tube capped at both ends and shorter than 2 AA batteries by the same length as 2 watch batteries might be the simplest solution, but making endcaps and geting the length right might be tedious. Losing some inside diameter might be a reason to try it some other way, though. Just a thought. :) I am thinking along the lines of being able to replace the batteries quickly and easily. :)

I am interested in seeing how long the batteries last! :)

Definitely keep playing with the design! Let us all know what you think works the best and why! :)

ok,this is a longshot, but i throught of an idea, get some sort of stiff stuffing(i know it sounds weird)
something similar to the finger out of a cotton glove
on the outside of the glove, sew some sort of netting/webbing all the way around it
then stick it into the shaft, let it stretch a bit, then cut of excess, you can use the outerpart with the netting to put your picks(inbetween netting and glove fabric) and put your tensions on the inside of the glove finger

let me try to draw a little thing with keyboard

/p|-t-|p/
/i|-e-|i/
/c|-n-|c/
/k|-s-|k/
/s|-i--|s/
/|-on-|/
______

i know it looks weird, but the "/" is the webbing and the "|" is the glove
