picks i made from the collection of templates topic

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

so i made some picks off a template ,I found in the collection of templates topic. the romstars picks i think there pretty close ,and i made them out of the metal strip that you find in filing cabinets envelopes. thanks to (i think it was) locksmith army for the idea about the envelopes. they look and feel and are the same dimensions, as the southord picks the ones with-out the handles.

i am in the middle of making a spot welder out of a microwave power supply ,if i get it to work, i will put some metal handles on and re-post some more pics

nice picks. get to sanding! ;-)

so you found the metal in the file cabinets worked well? my current stock of hacksaw blades are OK, but the metal isn't as springy as i'd like. it's a softer, cheaper steel. for picks it seems to be fine, but tension wrenches are a no-go with it... you make any tensioners with this stuff?

i had two lots of envelope some old ones and some newer ones, the older ones had the much better steel in then ,the newer ones are OK but i might try and temper them following, one of the tuts i seen earlier. i did make a good serrated tension wrench out of this material that im happy with

TWs can be made from wiper blades or street sweeper bristles really well. I would recommend these materials for TWs.

Made my first pick from the templates document, and a makeshift tension tool. I ordered some Southord picks last week, but they haven't arrived yet and I was getting impatient. Decided to hand-file enough to get started with some of the pick-fu threads. Plus I just like making things, so this was a good place to start. I'm not nearly as tool-impovrished as the photos suggest, but I'm an apartment dweller and keep most of my stuff at a workshop I share with a friend. I also have access to a full machine shop, but decided to make a first cut using just what I had immediately on hand. I cannibalized an old drain snake for material. The pick is the standard hook from BazookaMedic's bare necessities template.

Ghetto fabulous vice-grips. I'd left all my regular vice grips in my toolbag at work, but this actually works pretty well provided you're aggressive with the frapping. Used the gas burner on the stove to make the bend.

My fingers still hurt from all the filing. This steel is harder than I'd expected.

Finished them with 240, 400, and 800 grit sandpaper and then did a final polish with Iosso bore cleaner and 0000 steel wool.

Started on digitalBlue's beginner's lockpicking exercise, but turns out I filed the tension tool just a bit too small for the Kwikset deadbolt cylinder I'm practicing on. That started getting annoying pretty fast, so I practiced picking a MasterLock padlock a few times. Fun stuff!
