Wrecked padlock

Postby davey_b » 4 Aug 2010 4:19

Hi guys, I'm just looking for some advice with a padlock so I thought I would come to the experts. Hope you don't mind me just dropping in for some help but I'm a bit stuck with this one.

We are doing a self build and have the site secured with fencing. I have the gate secured with one of these: http://www.screwfix.com/prods/38231/Sec ... l-Padlock#

Someone has come along and put something in the hole where the key goes in the padlock and manged the thing so you can't really put the key in anymore and certainly not turn it. I'm just looking to remove the padlock and not sure if bolt cutters or something like that would work and just looking for your thoughts. More info about the lock here: http://www.sterlinglocks.com/acatalog/c ... dlocks.pdf and here: http://www.sterlinglocks.com/acatalog/s ... dlocks.pdf

Many thanks.

Thinking of hiring one of these for a day to take it off: http://www.vanburgh-contracts-ltd.co.uk ... _hire.html

That's a disc detainer padlock, whatever is stuck in there should be very easy to remove... as a matter of fact you should be able to hoke it out with a screwdriver as long as it isn't glued in. Just be gentle with it as it could be lodged between the discs/spacers and you'll want to avoid damage to them if you can. A pic of the blockage would really help... it'd be a shame to destroy the entire padlock when you could just pop the thing back out again.

I don't think there's anything stuck in there. I think they've put something in there and then turned it to damage the internal workings. thus I don't think they key will turn it it. I'll try and take some pics as I'm going down today.

Good idea. If that is the case, chances are one or more of the discs towards the back may just be rotated and they're preventing full insertion of the key... in that case all you'd need to do is turn the key back and forth as you insert it and everything will realign itself. If something is actually broken though, a locksmith can drill it out for you... would probably cost the same as hiring one of those saws and it'd save you a lot of effort aswell. :D

Thanks for your help guys. Went down today and tried the key in it again. Gave it a turn backwards and forwards but it wasn't going too well. Gave it a good hard turn and felt like it was turning but then the key broke in the lock! So just took the saw to it and it took about 1 minute to come off. Was good fun using the saw too. Cost £19.50 all in for the saw and used it for some other things so no biggy. Thanks again for all your help. I totally forgot to take photos so sorry about that.
