Total noob, with a minimal collection of stuff, but I'm keen if we can get more people involved.

A bit late, but PM sent to solo_suite.

Does anyone know of the legalities of starting up a locksport group in Australia? I'm considering of starting up a hacking space in Sydney. Not just locksport, but any real "tweaking" related stuff. DIY projects, custom mods, etc etc. Similar to the Maker Faire, but a little more low-key.

not so much in Sydney but in the west of NSW .i understand that you can have picks in your home in QLD (citation needed) does anyone know of a loophole like that here in new south.(other than being a smithy) ,because it is my understanding if you are caught with picks in your Possession, you are charged with intent. as they are classed as burglary tools, so how can we as hobbyist compete and be open and any sort of lock sport in this country or are we to forever a underground movement???

I've thought of that myself. I hope that we could get around like apprentice chefs do. Carry a locked (lol) tool box with our locks and tools inside. It won't be concealed, then, and you could probably explain your situation a lot easier if you're carrying around practise locks.
I don't know.. It's kinda hard to guess.
I imagine that anyone setting up a locksport meet in NSW would get fingerprints of all new members and a signed waiver of some sorts. For when the police come knocking on our doors, we can offer full disclosure and cooperation. Just like registered locksmiths.

I wish I could attend an established meet to see how the legalities are handled.

i don,t think the issue is that your tools are concealed ,the issue is why you have them in your possession ,concealed or not ,the law see them as burgle tools, i know a guy from the next town over, never been in trouble his whole life ,was in to lock picking just like us ,was pulled over for a RBT one night the officer did not like his attitude, and decide to search his car ,he consented to the search ,but forgot that there were a set of Peterson city picks in the glove box ,result he was charge with intent for burgley , faced court and received a fine, as he had not previously been in trouble with the law,

I could not afford to be caught with lock picks and face court ,and be branded a potential burgler ,as could any one else in these forums, and i don,t think the laws of NSW are going to change any time soon, don't get my wrong i would love to see a lock sport comp in Australia, and i would love to compete against all comers,i just don't think its going to happen here in oz.

please don't take my post as negative,i would like to think that i am more of a realist

About the only way you could do it legally in NSW was to hold a Class 2C Security Equipment Specialist license as the same as Locksmiths are required to hold. For some of us that wouldn't be an issue as we already do but for others it would be an added cost as well as inconvenience to have fingerprints taken as well as criminal history checks.
