Is it possible to pick a Euro with the electric pick gun?

Postby urbanscapes » 11 Aug 2010 10:05

Is it possible to pick a Euro with the electric pick gun? Or is it best to just drill?

I have been practising with my new electric pick gun. I'm becoming quite proficient with the gun on cylinders but just can't not crack the Euros. Some advice would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks :)

The short answer is yes. The long answer is, depends on the lock. We're more about picking locks manually for the puzzle of it than simply getting them open, but if you tell us which euros you're working on I'm sure we can give you some insight as to why you're having trouble. Mechanically they're no different to any other pin tumbler cylinder so it'll be a matter of the type of pins or maybe the bitting... you may also have something with a sidebar, although that's unlikely.

A few questions. What country are you from, are you a locksmith, a hobby picker, or an urban explorer, and when you say euros, just to make sure you mean euro profile cylinders where the pins are on the bottom, unlike a rim or mortise cylinder where you normally push up on the pins, correct? What brand EPG are you using, and if you are a locksmith, picking is a much nicer way of getting past a lock, than raping it with an EPG or going all cowboy on it and drilling it out, when it doesn't really need to be drilled out, unless the point is to upsell a new lock to the customer.

The other question is, which locks have you been able to pick with a pick set and the EPG, maybe that 5 pin Y1 Yale is easy compared to a 7 pin ASSA euro profile cylinder which has much nastier security pins inside it.

Thanks for any more details you can provide,

Most of my locksmith colleagues in UK use a EPG. There are a number of different guns available. Most of the guys I know use a the Wendt gun from Germany. Once you get the knack of how to use it, it is awesome.
Use it on everything from euros to rims and many of the different european shaped cylinders.
Some of the EPG's are quite violent and you can see brass filings coming out of the lock when picking.
But like ordinary picks everyone has their own feel and touch and requires practice and trial to see what suits best.
