So, a new hackerspace is opening up in downtown Los Angeles in about a month or two. I will be one of the sponsors/owners, and it is in a good spot for most people in the LA area to get to.

Is there any interest in getting together a locksport group to meet up once a month at the hackerspace? If you live within 20 miles of downtown the public transit to the hackerspace is pretty good, and driving shouldn't be too bad for the rest of you. Like all other locksport groups, this group will abide by a strict set of ethics. Namely, don't pick locks you don't own or have permission to pick, and don't pick locks that are in use.

I will host the meetings, and I'm sure I'll be able to drag JK up here each month now that he lives nearby : ) Between the two of us we can give presentations on just about every type of lock, safe, and method of entry there is.

If you are interested: Please post your general location and your skill level as a lockpicker. List anything else that you think would be helpful in getting the group up and running.

The group will be free and open to the public, but, like all hackerspaces, if you can throw in a buck or two to the community pot each visit it would be very helpful in making sure the space can stay running, clean, and well stocked with tools and toys.

Thanks,
datagram

I will definitely be coming out to LA for this one. If there is interest, I can bring the lathe/mill along as well. This is going to be awesome, I'll be driving over 2 hours to get there; all you locals must be there :-)

Hey all,

Well we have a lockpicking meetup planned at the hackerspace that Datagram mentioned earlier. Here is the website for the space: http://032.la/ and here are some details:

Date: Friday, May 21st, 2010
Time: Evening
Location: 3rd floor of 1015 S Main St, Los Angeles, CA 90015

There's no time set in stone yet, but I expect to show up between 6PM and 7PM (maybe a bit earlier). So shoot us a reply here if you're thinking of coming out. Whether you're a brand new beginner or a 1773 lox hax0r, this will be good times for all.

Reminder: First meeting friday! We're planning on arriving at 7 PM, traffic abiding. Be there! Feel free to bring any locks and tools you'd like to donate to the space so that we can get a small collection going for anyone who wants to hang out and practice picking.

The first meeting was a good time and very productive. I wrote up a little blurb with pictures about it here:

As Jon said, the first meeting went well. We had 4-5 more people interested but there was a conflicting going away party. I also needed to give better notice...hopefully June will be twice as big!

The next meeting is June 18th (always the third Friday of the month from now on) and we'll be going over basic lockpicking techniques and learning about different lock designs. I left a few dozen practice locks and picks at the space, so you can practice picking whenever you're there. We're also getting ideas for projects and so on, so shoot any ideas my way.

Thanks,
dg

Next meeting is on August 20th, we'll be doing a hands-on workshop for all attendees covering the following topics:

+ Making your own picks
+ Making bump keys
+ Impressioning
+ Getting better at picking

We'll also go over some organizational business, particularly our meetings membership in TOOOL and LI. We now have a meetup.com group at http://www.meetup.com/li-losangeles/ as well as the Null Space Labs mailing list (info at 032.la).

Hope to see some of you there.

Thanks,

Had an awesome time at the last meeting! Definitely worth going to. Lots of friendly people and space. Definitely got me in the mood to think about locks and picking again.
