American A748 or Abloy PL342 for Shipping Container?

Postby ShortFuse » 2 Sep 2010 10:59

Hey guys,

I found this website while researching American vs. Abloy padlocks. Have done some searching here, but am unable to see some forums due to being new.

I need to secure a 40 ft shipping container that I use for storage in a rural area. I currently have 4 American 5260s on it, but think I need to upgrade to shrouded locks. Picking, bumping or key control is not really a big concern. The main threat will probably be liquored up kids with bolt cutters and/or a 4 wheel drive truck with a heavy chain connected to the locking rods.

I have been very pleased with American locks before, but was disappointed to find out they were purchased by Master and are now assembled in Mexico.

I understand no lock can keep out determined people, but the Abloys are almost twice as much as the American locks.

Are they worth the difference for this application? Any other locks I should consider?

Increasing perimeter security, alarm, cameras, etc. are not really an option at this time.

Thanks.

You need an MX shipping container hasp with a V103b padlock. It's gonna cost ya about $800 US but its the best on the market. Made in Sweden by Storm Locks.

But if you had to choose and it can fit onto your container the Abloy PL362 with Protec core is a good choice. https://securitysnobs.com/Abloy-Protec-PL-362-Shrouded-Hardened-Steel-Padlock.html *just make sure the shackle diameter will fit into the holes on your shipping containers locking mechanism.

protip: spray paint the padlock flat black so its not shining in the sun and attracting attention and you'll be all set. To some people a nice padlock = nice stuff being guarded.

skip the American 748, Abloy is a much better choice. Also, a real metal or vinyl sign from a company like Seton proclaiming a "cellular alarm in use" and or "this property monitored remotely" or "remote cctv in use", will introduce doubt and fear, even if there is no alarm and no obvious cameras. It's a great investment of ~$20, and if you can't find a vinyl or metal sign you like in the Seton catalogs, a local sign shop can make a custom one for about the same money.

good luck with your project,

Thanks, Squelchtone.

I am going to measure to make sure it fits, but will probably go with the PL362.

Painting the locks and the security sign were also great great ideas that I will do.

The Abloys are also works of art, so it will be a shame to deface them.

Yeah, I heard the Abloy padlock body shape and vertical line were actually designed by an artist so they would look nicer than a typical padlock.

As for sings, I had stuff like this in mind: http://www.seton.com/signs/security-signage/bilingual-security-signs/custom-english-spanish-security-signs-97907.html

http://www.seton.com/signs/security-signage/security-camera-surveillance-signs/custom-personalized-security-signs-electronic-surveillance-l1933.html

but I think you get the idea.

wanna go crazy? drill a 1/8 inch hole in the side near the doors and screw or liquid-nails a small red or blue home alarm strobe and run the wires into the container, so if they rip it off they see wires going inside, and inside tape the wires down with duct tape or put a knot on them so they're hard to rip out and makes it seem likes its terminated to something.

On top of the container, mount an old magnetic mount mobile cellular antenna to make it seem the container can "call home" or "that it may have a cellular alarm" silicone it down or use liquid nails and cut the wire down and silicone it down so it looks like its going into the container via a drilled hole that may or may not be there.

and if you feel comfortable, when you're done with this project, we'd love to see a pic! =)

ps. if you want to know if anyone was around, dig out the dirt for 4 feet around the container about an inch down, and replace it with play sand, so you can see tracks, shoe prints, drag marks, etc. It all depends on how hardcore you're gonna go. I had a guy on IRC asking similar stuff in the last year, we had some awesome ideas on how to get the place rigged up so it screamed "go away."

I forgot all about this awesome Abloy "Enforcer" line design.. made just for locking barn doors on an 18 wheeler trailer, it uses the Abloy 350 padlock

http://cgi.ebay.com/ENFORCER-ADJUSTABLE-DOOR-LOCK-USED-MINT-CONDITION-/220664196668

I have one of these, they're very heavy duty.

hope this helps,
