KGB Lock Pick.. Lead or Gold?

I just received my KGB lock pick set today. You might have seen my other post on this site at http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=48788. I must admit i am extremely disappointed by it. I knew it was small but this small??????? I am in serious doubt whether it can pick, let's say a dead bolt lock. I have included pictures of it here. I hope someone can enlighten me as to whether this is actually possible with picks this small. I really hope for positive answers. Hehe.

That looks pretty asweome and portable. Appears easier to pocket than some of the other kits.

I have a credit card lock-pick set from DX and they are just as small with worse handles. Although I prefer my normal picks, you can still open locks with them fine. just get used to them and you will be able to use them better then you can imagine.

My opinion: What did you expect? This is a novelty set, and if anyone actually carries on, it is more than likely a back up for their back up. It looks well made, but yeah, in order to fit in a little case on your belt, it has to be small.

If this is going to be your primary set for learning how to pick, don't get gimmicky lock pick sets like credit cards, KGB sets, or jack knives. Get a regular set with regular handles.

agreed...the portable, small kits have their purpose, and i don't think anyone should be afraid they can't pick...not to say they can pick as much, or as comfortable as other picks, but for a novelty/backup set it makes sense.

Neat set. I like how that bottom one is an extractor on one side and a hook on the other.

These will totally work, but may not be comfortable. you might be able to kludge them onto bigger handles, but the best (and by best I mean cheapest) way to get tools is to make them out of hacksaw or street sweeper bristle.

I have decided to look at other pick sets - normal sized ones. I managed to find these:



I see that they seem to be from SouthOrd. Are they known for good quality picks? Note that it includes a book. Does anyone have any experience with this particular book?

Would these be able to provide comfortable picking compared to the KGB mini ones?

Southord picks are ok, but I would go with the laminated handle versions if you want a more comfortable pick. I'm not keen on the rubber slip on handles as I feel I get better response from the hard handles. Either set will be more comfortable to use than the KGB set.
The book is just 25 pages of info you could easily find here.

That book is ok but you'll find much more detailed (and better) info here on this site, and for free. I'd focus more on getting quality tools than on study material like that one.
