Securing a cylinder in the vise

Postby pointofview » 11 Sep 2004 22:40

I've been practicing impressioning for the last few nights, and I've been running into some problems with the cylinder that I'm working on slipping in the vise, as I'm putting a lot of pressure on it. Is there something I can use between the cylinder and vise jaws to secure my work? I tried 2 small peices of softwood I had lying around, but I'm thinking that there must be a commercial product out there. I'm thinking something rubberish would be ideal...

What does everybody else use?

The vice I use has brass plates that I place over the jaws. They seem to work well for me.

You're going to laugh your tail off, but......

Provided you can't get a cylinder holder, go buy two large very dense sponges.

The density of the sponge allows it to create a cradle around the cylinder, but not crush it. After the vice is tighted sufficiently cut the excess sponge away from the vice jaws and cylinder.

This trick also works using sponge rubber, or neoprene, or some other rubber compounds. Anything that has an above average density, but is still compressable, without exerting too much force.

Have fun,
Romstar

Hmmm... I wasn't able to find sponges at Home Depot that I think would work, so I picked up a rubber doormat, about 3/8" thick. I'm at work right now, but I'm going to slice some strips off of it and try them out when I get home.

Wish me luck!

Ya could use aluminum grips or if you want cheap, get a couple of dollar store "door stops" and put one on each side. Clamp until it doesn't move.

'Course if you want to get fancy, you could always go to a lockie and buy a used (or asked for a non-working one) A/R latch to thread it into. Makes it more life like. :)
