A lever lock with a double-bitted key has two sets of levers, instead of one. You can see an example of one of these types of lock in a thread that I'd posted a few months ago: NATO Mersey Lock.

They are, in theory, picked the same way as any other lever lock: you just have twice the number of levers, and slightly different feedback to deal with. (And the fact that the levers are located on opposite sides of the keyway means that you'll likely need something more than a standard 2-in-1 tool.)

If the cuts on two sides of the key are a mirror image of one another, the levers could be only on one side. You can use the same key from both sides of the door. Like Boda:

I've not seen a design with 2 sets of levers - Usually a double bitted key will operate a single set of levers, with 2 gates, as part of a double throw mechanism.

The first 180 turn of the key raises the levers, and the stump passes through the first gate, then the second half of the turn lifts the levers again, to different heights, and throws throws or withdraws the bolt further.

Here in Italy "doppia mappa" locks are everywhere too, they're used in brand new armoured doors but you can find them even in old garage doors!

Cheers :)

The Chubb lips 14 lever lock has erm. 14 levers, seven on one side and seven on the other so each flag of the key can have different cuts to lift the levers.

Not all double-bitted keys operate two sets of levers. In many (safe-) cases, the levers are not spring-operated, and thus the "backside" prevents overlifting of the lever when you turn the key. Post a picture of the lock and key you have, and we will be able to give you a better answer :)

Picking lever-locks is not that hard, you just take a good tool, plenty of time and a fair amount of skill. Before you know it,- you´re in
