Sere Bogota picks

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

FYI: At one point, fairly recently, no tools were allowed as carry-on items at U.S. airports. I did a non-lock related job in Tahoe and had to check all of my tools. I do not know if this is still true but even a common combination wrench or hex key was to be checked.

As for metal detectors, I have an aluminum belt buckle and it never sets off metal detectors, i.e. airport or court house (Jury duty for those wondering why I was in court). I do not know the theory behind it but aluminum is conductive.

i couldn't find the specific thread that discusses the different types of metal detectors and their capabilities to search for certain alloys--in the same thread there is a discussion of a somewhat anthropological look at metal detectors and their changes...so, i found this one instead...seems to be a topic of discussion quite frequently. weird i say...better off safe than sorry, i don't see what situation someone would need to carry a pick set from terminal to terminal...but whatever, here's a link: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=43229&hilit=carry+on

I don't fly often, but was curious to try carrying a few picks and wrench through airport security, so when the opportunity arose, I checked local laws (in both, my states of origin and destination), and the latest TSA regs (http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/ ... ems.shtm#7). My picks were less than seven inches long, so I tried it out.

I did not pass through the metal detector with them, and opted for the grope instead of the back-scatter (hadn't experienced it first hand and wanted to know for myself how invasive it was - would not let children be felt up by the TSA; afraid of sending the message that "your body belongs to you, and to people in uniforms")

I put my picks, uncovered, on top of my laptop to go through the x-ray and didn't get a second glance.

My belt usually doesn't set off the metal detector, and it occurs to me that I could conceal picks in my belt, then if the detector goes off, I could surreptitiously place them in a tray for the x-ray machine, but a. if you set off the detector you'd still wonder whether it was your belt, or your picks, b. if you do raise suspicion, it will be hard to claim you didn't know you had them on you, c. getting felt up the the TSA is much better than being taken to a back room and getting the jelly finger.

I would feel comfortable keeping them in my wallet, which I normally just carry through the metal detector, or in my shirt pocket, and then (not wearing a belt) I'd know whether the picks set it off, or not, and if so, I'd just put them through the x-ray without worrying about how it may go bad for having tried to conceal them.
