Identifying lock type from key??

Postby pontiacmo » 18 Nov 2010 18:28

I am fairly new to the hobby and have managed to have some success picking door knob locks with some homemade tools and a pick gun I acquired at an estate sale. I am working my way through different lock types and I noticed that all of the keys for the locks I have worked with so far have had a straight across shoulder. I have a misc key that I do not have a lock for, my guess is that its from an old apt I've had in the past. This key has an offset shoulder and from the research I've done it looks to be a Kwikset KW11 blank. My question is how do I determine what type of lock would take a key like this??

I'm not sure what you mean "straight across shoulder"
But if its a Kwikset key its probably from a Kwikset or Kwikset knock off brand lock. I've haven't heard much of anything about KW11, but kw1.. thats a commanly used key.

Does the grooving look the same as a Kwikset? You probably have a KW10 blank if it is. This blank will fit the older Kwiksets and the Kwikset Titan which are 5 pin and 6 pin respectively. The older Kwikset plugs have a flat face and the Titan plug has a square groove milled on the bottom of the plug. This allows the key to enter the plug further and is stopped by the top shoulder, allowing for 6 pins. On the older Kwikset plugs, the blank is stopped by the bottom shoulder. That is why you can key the older Kwiksets and Titan locks alike, even though one is 5 pins and the other is 6 pins. The older ones would be pinned to the last 5 cuts of the key.
