Kwikset deadbolt picked in 5 seconds by a complete newbie

Postby Kodack » 24 Sep 2004 2:44

I really hope it is just a fluke, because this deadbolt used to secure my front door.

I am brand new to lockpicking. In fact, I can say I picked my first lock tonight, the same day I got my tools delivered.

At first it was hard, took me 30 minutes using a half diamond pick before it popped the first time.

Later on, after much practice I found I could spring the lock in 3 seconds, including the time it took to get the torque bar in.

My question is this, "Is this just a fluke, easily picked lock, or does Kwikset really suck??"

I found I could open it as easily as a key using light pressure on the torque bar, inserting a diamond rake, and not even having to rake it, but instead just jently pushing up at the rear and pulling forward, pops like a charm.

What's wrong with this lock?

Not to discourage you, but kwikset is generally quite poor. Try some harder ones. :)

It doesn't discourage me. I'm brand spanking new at this so it was a good confidence booster. But I still didn't expect it to be so easy. It's almost like a design defect like those bike locks that open with a bic pen.

Is Schlage any good?

Kwiksets are generally easier to open than say a schlage due to looser manufacturing tolerances. Alot of it depends on bitting also, you mentioned that you are able to pretty much insert the pick and turn.....if your lock was keyed tighter (high/low) it would present more of a challenge.
And please....... dont mention bic pens any more....... :x

This isn't a fluke, many locks that are considered to be secure are just waiting to fly open with the slightest manipulation.

i was talking to a locksmith a few days ago. we were talking about the hardest locks we've picked. he told me the hardest he's picked are shlages. i had to hold back a smile.

Could have been a generalization rather than his monument, i.e. the hardest locks I routinely pick are Schlages. He also could have been implying Primus and/or Everest?

yeah that was funny. But the idea is still true. I have one lock on a shed that I opened with a tension wrench and a snake with one swipe.

fun but eye opening.

lol

I think now with the schlage vs kwikset, I'd say schlage to be easier

I have had very poor luck with straight picking a Smartkey, but have not had much issue with SecureKey.
