Thining a jigsaw blade 4 better feedback.

Postby calvinism » 12 Dec 2010 15:10

Hi guys. Ok ive made picks from hacksaw blades and jigsaw blades. The hacksaw blades are amazing and so are the jigsaw blades. The jigsaw blades are just to thick but they are alot stiffer than the hacksaw blades and do definataly give a better feedback. Ok so i was wondering to myself, what if u could taper a jigsaw blades thickness towards thd tip? It would still be thicker towards the handle giving it a stiffer feel but would be thin enough towards the tip to fit in a narow keyway. I know a hacksaw blade is strong enough and if it breaks ur obviously using 2much tension so the pins wont budge or ur just being to rough 4 it. Im going for feedback more than strenth? So what do you guys think? And how do u think i can taper the blades thickness? Thanx 4 any help

Thinner picks don't make a huge difference in terms of feedback. As long as you can work your way around most keyways with it then I wouldn't bother. If you really insist on thinning it out, grind it very gently on either side or sand it... to be honest you'd be much better off just working with a thinner material in the first place though.

Im not saying a thiner pick will give a better feel. Im saying a stiffer pick will. And a jigsaw blade is super stiff. Its just to thick. So if u made it as thin as a hacksaw blade then u have not got a stiffer pick. But if u taper it so the tip is as thick as a hacksaw blade and the backpart thats closest to the handle as thick as the jigsaw blade then you will hav a stiffer pick that wouldnt bend as easy and will hav a better feedback. . .

a file will cut it thinner with an even flat surface if you have experience with using a file and a practiced flat stroke, (newcomers to filing will change the angle of attack during the stroke and this is what you learn not to do.

however a file leaves a rough surface and sanding is necessary

a band sander could be used to thin the metal but with this method, I would thin the saw blade before cutting out the profile of the new pick not after the pick shape is roughed out.

The reason for this is that the extra thickness guards against quickly going too deep and ruining the workpiece.

Use a sharpening stone and plenty of elbow grease. To get the taper, keep 2 or three fingers on the part you want thinned out.

Do you think a jigsaw blade might be stiffer *because* it's thicker...?! Thinning it will make it more flexible, and possibly loose and advantage in terms of feedback.

what i find is that a jigsaw blade, thicker than a metal brick strap or spring steel, can be made into dimple lock picks better because they can be thinned down for the picking platform at the tip and still remain strong enough to turn clockwise or counterclockwise. but they are often too thick to put into some keyways, and often grinding them down thinner just weakens them. :|
