Is there any recommend lube I can use on Locks

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Is there any recommend lube I can use on Locks

Postby pingable » 14 Dec 2010 11:54

With Outdoor Padlocks, that see rainy cold weather, etc....is there a lube I could use in them just to minimize the water..

Or the general gist is that it's just the very nature of the weather, and I either need to have a torch handy or a small cup of hot water to melt the ice so I could put either put a key in it or just unfreeze things...

Abloy padlocks are very good for outdoors and water and ice, look into them if you do not find a good lubricant.

I've got a good mix of Abloys...but for the stuff I am using as general locks (shed, gate, etc), it's a mix of American 5200 and 5100 locks.

I like to use silicone lube for my locks (I use silicone for best IC cores) and they work well. Be sure if you use silicone, clean the cylinder with a key and some WD 40 to remove the graphite. I don't particularly like graphite b/c it tends to cake up the insides of the lock cylinder. (Any complete hardware store)

Another great product, although a tad more expensive is Houdini lock Lubricant. Some stores like Osh will have Lock-Ease but i do not recommend it as it is essentially a graphite powder mixed with WD-40 (Can be purchased at some locksmith/supply stores or online)

Lastly another formula that works well is Medeco's own lock lubricant formula, although a bit expensive ($12) it is graphite, silicone, and WD-40 free. It works well in locks with a lot of moving parts. (Can be purchased at about any Medeco Dealer)

Just my 2 cents

Hope this helps,

Dupont Teflon Multi-use, or anything PTFE (generic name for Teflon) based.

I like using gasoline to clean, and use only graphite

Graphite here.

Simply applying to the key with a pencil and inserting into the lock can unseize it.

If you want hardcore outdoor locks, you can't beat a disc detainer. Put an abloy in my freezer for a week and it still worked like it was room temperature.
What a load of old BiLocks!!!!

I'm probably 0 for 400 in looking for safes behind wall paintings
