4 Piece Set Enough?

Ok im gonna buy picks individually from southord and i was wondering if a diamond, hook, s rake, and a short twist flex tension wrench enough? If i were to get one diamond and one hook should they be large or small? also will the large ones fit in padlocks? thanks

Go with the small hook, and you probably will want at least one more tension wrench, as they come in a variety of sizes, even from SouthOrd.

After having done this for 16 years, and also listening to a lot of people, I have pretty much become convinced that a nine piece set is about the best way to start.

A small and medium diamond, a small and medium lifter, two rakes, and three tension tools. Occasionally there will be a ball pick for wafer locks, and only two tensioners. This is acceptable as well.

You can learn, and get by with just the four picks, and a tensioner or two, but I really think that nine is the best way to go.

There are a few pickers on here that use almost nothing but a medium lifter or a small half diamond. There are a few who can open just about anything with a 3/4 rake but overall as you develop, you will discover that the extra picks can give you a range that only 4 could not give you.

ok sorry for a 3 posts in a row but do i really need a ball pick? can i open wafers with others? i dont want to buy picks that i wont even use because i dont want to waste money.

I like having a ball pick around, but then again I like drinking Illy espresso. Its not necessary, but it can be nice on occasion. The half diamond will be like a cup of Tim Hortons, or Starbucks, it will get the job done, but you may find you enjoy something else more. Now I need a cup of coffee.

they are just some old handleless southords, that got replaced by petersons and navigator set.

I'll send a long hook, a medium diamond, a S rake, and a c rake, an s rake, a w rake, a ball pick, a key extractor, and an l rake, and a small tension wrench. all you'll need is more tension wrenchs, which you can make yourself. I'll send it for the price you'd be paying southord, for 4 picks plus their UPS shipping fees. so it will be as cheap for you as possible. PM me and we'll work it out.
