Hi,

The new opening trick to open a kensington laptop lock using a roll of toilet paper was discovered at a conference called 'EuroFoo'.

Basically, this is essentially the same principle used in "standard" tubular picks. You impression the key as you go along, and end up with an open lock. The paper roll is wound around some pen or rod of the right diameter, and used to impression the key.

...ah... I love my DS-3.

About 5/6ths the way through the video... a guy wearing a blakc "2600" T-shirt cuts a small section out of a toilet paper tube, wraps it around a pen to make a tube the same diameter as a key and then uses the tube to open the tubular lock.

Those that aren't familar with the Kensington lock, bear in mind it is missing several pins, it is only a five pin lock. Missing pins in the 12,3 and 9 oclock positions. Outside of that, they are indeed all keyed differently.

The tube sorta softens up and gives as he continually twists it inside the lock in the direction it opens.

He gets it open in about five seconds.

I've successfully reproduced it and I've opened the same Kensington style cable lock in less than 15 seconds on my first attempt.

Pretty creative trick.

Btw, for those of you who were paying attention in the video, Gaffer's tape is like super duct tape. Its matte black, made of cloth with an adhesive that doesnt leave a sticky residue. Its used in the theatre/television/movie industry. It can be a bit expensive, $20 a roll is what many people pay. It can be hard to find, but its worth it.

The trick works with any kind of tape.
So you can use scotch or any other material.

I also manage to do it without tape, but more errors occur when you do that.

Some people use a pen or something else round with the right diameter, roll the paper around it, and use a tie-rap or scotch tape to keep the paper in place.

But the basic idea is the same...

Hahaha how demoralizing for Kensington. Seriously, if i knew someone who made a lock that could be broken into using a toilet roll...hahhaha. Truely, thats embarrasing for them.

I know this may sound stupid, but i couldn't get it. :cry:

I'll keep working on it. I know you said a pen didn't work but would a cut off bic pen work i cut one up and its a perfect fit i just couldn't get it. Of course i couldn't get it with tp so i can't compare it.
