Can't get the first pin..

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Can't get the first pin..

Postby icor1031 » 28 Dec 2010 12:47

I'm pretty sure I get multiple of the pins behind it, just by using the rake, because when I loosen tension I can hear 3 to 5 clicks.. However, I absolutely cannot get the First pin.

Help?

Kind of lock, brand, model, etc, pictures help you could be raking a lock with security pins... Others gonna tell you just use search.

Just lifting the pins up doesn't meant they're set, it just means they're lifted to a certain height and being held in place by the friction of the plug rotating by the torque of your wrench. You can have at rest, underset where the pins stack is lifted but the driver pin is still below the sheer line, set where the key pin is lifted so it is flush with the outside diameter of the plug, thus creating a sheer line, which at the same time means the driver pin or "top pin" was pushed out of the plug and into the bible or lock housing, or overset where the key pin has been lifted past the shear line, thus stopping the plug from rotating.

As you may notice by looking at a house key or padlock key, the cuts (the valleys) are at differing heights, which means that key pushes the pins up to different heights in order to push all the driver or "top pins" out of the way in order for the plug to be able to turn left or right.

Hope this helps, look up some lock animations on youtube, or download the Locksport International Visual Guide

Have a good day,

I can already tell you that this is a faux pas for locksport enthusiasts and, by extension, the members of this site.

This lock is in use. Even if it's yours, you still run the risk of damaging your lock.

I recommend finding another lock on which to practice, one you can re-pin would be best. It's just not good, safe, practice to hone your skills on locks in your house.

That said, it appears to be a Kwikset cylinder. Likely to have five pins, none of which should be security pins. In which direction were you picking this lock? (Clockwise or counter-clockwise)
There is no means by which I can be removed from the love of God. For this, I am indescribably glad.

You over set a pin.
And take if off the door, you'll have MUCH more feedback.
