Lock Bumping....

Postby Shun91 » 15 Jan 2011 13:07

Hey guys, does lock bumping still work on most locks or did the lock manufacturers start making them bump proof? If someone answers this post, would it be too hard to ask that person for a list of Bump Proof and Non-Bump Proof locks?! I do know that some locks as compared to others are Bump Proof while others are not....And when I ask for the List, really all I need is the Lock Brands that are proof or not proof....Thanks once again for your help guys......

 All locks today are made bump proof and all old locks without high security measures are bumpable unless you have them rekeyed or use a bump proof spray like this :D  :

Actually you're question is crazy, there are way to many locks to list and to many debates on it in the first place.

Bumping locks is highly frowned upon in the hobbiest lockpicking community and damages the lock and does not actually require any skill... I'm going to try and give you some advise before you get shunned and scolded by a lot of people on here. Search, and research. Use the search function on "lock bumping" "bump key/s" and go read up on stuff before you post. You are new and when you come in here talking about something that is highly frowned upon and not considered in good faith of the community you take a chance at making it look bad and insulting people. Bumping has become more of comparison to "script kiddies" in the hacking sense, a bunch of no skilled people who think they are doing something cool. Do you research learn a little ask questions about what you've learned. You tube is a great resource but it is full of kids with bump keys and cheap locks. Actually read some stuff and learn. There are a lot of stickies that will show you how a lock works and how to properly manipulate them through picking, this is an enjoyable hobby and a great community if you don't come in looking like someone who wants to do something illegal or damageing, which in many places bump keys are illegal except to certified and licensed locksmiths. Hope this helps get you on the right track.

Hey Wolf, Thanks for the heads up....I really did not mean to try and insult anyone....Besides, I already know how to pick a lock but I'm not that skilled yet so I thought I'd look into another alternative....Seein' as what you had to say though, I think I'll stick to lock picking! Can you give me a suggestion for some home made lock picking tools though? I really can't afford the top dollar sets right now and at the moment I'm using a thin 1 1/2 inch long screw driver for the "Pick" and a metal ball point pen 'Clip' as the "Tension Wrench"....If you can suggest anything better the help would be appreciated......

There are tons of tutorials on making tools. Windwhield wiper blades for tension wrenchs and jig saw blades, street sweeper blades and dozens of other materials for making picks. You can get a starter set and book for under 20 bucks:

Plust put the LP101 coupon code in on that site to get 10% off. You tube does have great stuff for "homebrew lock picks" "home made lock picks" "how to make lock picks", etc... It's all about researching what works best for you.

I agree with you on most points. However, I think that knowing how to bump locks is still very important. It's true that it doesn't require that much skill. But perfecting the craft is a different question altogether. It takes a lot of skill to consistently do it in the first attempt or two. At the very least, you need to develop the perfect timing and you need to know how to make the perfect bump key.

In addition, doing it the right way won't damage the lock in the same way that using lock picks the right way won't damage the lock. There is a good amount of further free info at this site about

Not all locks made today are bump proof or even mildly bump resistant so dont think by buying a new one you are solving the problem and not all old locks are bumpable either and thats not by design.
Abloy ava and many other disk detainer locks are mostly bump proof because of their design even if they where not intended to be resistant as are wafer locks and virtually all lever locks.
Very few breakins are done using bumpkeys and or picking and the media are mostly to blame for the hype when they have a slow news day.

I was under the impression it was always more damaging to the lock than picking. I mean, even under the best cases, you're still imparting a great deal of force to the lock, much more then you ever really would picking it.

I've watched a bunch of presentations where they stated they had locks that no longer function because of it, but haven't seen any (yet?) where they said they had picked it to death.

The turning force is only slight and the actual force to drive the key isnt much, solong as you are using an appropriate tool.
