KLOM Tubular Lock Pick Issues

Postby WolfSpring » 28 Jan 2011 12:26

So I ordered by KLOM Tubular Lock Pick the beggining of NOV and it arrived at the house mid Jan and my wife sent it out here to me. Right out the box I had already read up and watched youtube and had a great understanding of this pick I also had two tubular locks. A cheap South Ord practice lock(10 bucks after discount) and some trailer hitch lock I picked up for like 15 bucks at a sportsman warehouse called TRIMAX. Anyways the TRIMAX is messed up I had picked it with normal picks and actualy picked it one turn then popped out the tumbler through the key way I had fixed it but I also messed up the inner keyway, but that's not important.

My first attempt with the south ord was an unexpected success. I tightened the the pick fully then backed off just a little, witht he fingers flush to the bottom I pused the pick into the lock and turned, it opened first attempt, I reset did it again, several times. Thinking to myself, wow this is really that good I gave the TRIMAX a shot, it didn't work. I pulled out the key to the trimax copied it onto the pick and it worked but I had to put a lot of force on the pick to make it turn the lock. So I reset it and tried again, knowing it took a little extra force, nothing over and over, different tighness on the pick itself. I noticed that one finger was not moving that should be so I put the lock in a vise pulled the finger up a little and tried pressing it into the pin, barely any pressure and the finger L snapped off. I was furious at this point and doing the rational thing I colected the broken piece and put it away. I came in the next night calm and collected and looked at the damage, and tried to open my south ord lock again and it was not working at all.

At this point I'm sitting with a broken finger worthless pick I figure we can fix this, bobby pins. So My first attempt I simply pulled out and bent a bobby pin and filed it down till it fit, but it was to loose, so I meassured the existing finger to .017" and the next boby pin I did my best to get in the meassurment and it worked, but now one of the other fingers is really loose so I tried moving them arround and bottome line is I've got two or three fingers that are two loose and 2 that are to tight and I can't lock down the loose ones at all and if I try the tight ones will not move at all.

Has anyone had this issue? Is there a fix? Can I order just the fingers anywhere, are they compatable with the southord finger? Should I just cut my losses and buy a south ord Tube pick? I am so frustrated about this, mainly because it worked so well and now I can't figure it out, I did try putting rubber bands around it instead like i've seen many do but this did not work. I can "pick" the lock if I put it in the vise and turn CW pressure and push the pins one at a time, but it will not hold like a key that way and will do one turn at a time which is just as effective as using a hook and t wrench. Any help here is greatly appreciated.

Hey,wolfspring, I have had similar problems with the KLOM tubular pick.
(and ,like you much better success with the southord.)
(the "L" shaped part of of the fingers are notorious for breaking off, especially when shipped from DX..)
anyway an easy fix for the loose fingers: remove the handle, then the loose fingers.
bend them slightly into a bow ")" shape, then re-insert.
also adding a thicker o-ring inside the collar helps.
( i usually leave the larger spring out upon reassembly, and rotate the handle 180-, then tighten the grub screw into the hole the side button depresses into so it becomes a rigid unit giving better feedback..
the "auto reset" feature is a waste of time, IMHO and hinders picking success)
i have also seen sets of replacement fingers available on the web.
good luck.

It looks like the "RTRO-8" from Southern Specialties might be worth considering. They claim "Turn your import into a better performing tool with this retro fit kit." It's $12.95 on their site.

I'm not sure if HPC's replacement feelers would work for you or not, but here they are:
