That issue has been raised here many times before...

Apparently there is some sort of glitch in the on-forum search function...

Experienced peoples around the forum search for things in the open section using google with the following query type:

site:www.lockpicking101.com "masterkey"

Would return a list of postings in the open forums where registration is not required of every thread in which the search terms appear...

Welcome to the site...

It is in the only section of the Advanced Locks section that everyone can read. It's the first section called "Advanced Locks Information". It is not intuitive.

I don't think being a member for 3 months and having 40 "quality" posts that either help others or contribute to the forum, for the applicant to be of sound character and being able to handle advanced material as voted by the mods is too rigid. Maybe the first time he applied he didn't get in, or maybe he's never applied.

One has to apply, write a note saying why they need/want the access and then you wait a month or two. My application process took over 2 months, but I was very happy the day I got the saying I had been granted access.

Here are the official details; if they have not already been posted above: http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=2474

Good luck to all qualified applicants!

I'll chime in here, albeit hesitantly because of the possibility my memory could be mistaken. I apologize in advance to SnowyBoy if I got the name wrong and if he's not the person who was involved in this, please correct me if that is the case.

A few years back there was another lockpicking forum, name began with E Z but I'm not going to write it out because I think at one point it was wordfiltered on lp101. I believe most of the members simply used it (and other similar forums) as an alternate resource of information, with no particular "allegiance" to any one site. However, a small number of members were people who had been banned from this site or who had been denied advanced forum access. There were some hard feelings and inflammatory posts cropped up regularly over there, directing ire towards this forum.

Towards the end of that site's days, there was a particularly ugly flame war that erupted between the two sites. At one point, I believe it was SnowyBoy who spoke up and admitted he had been deliberately trolling on the E Z site, trying to stir up trouble in response to constant spamming of lp101 by someone involved with that site. The E Z site was hacked shortly after and the database lost, so I'm unable to verify my recollections.

I can't speak for the moderators or admin of this site, so I'm just speculating here, but if I'm remembering this situation right it might explain why he doesn't have access to the advanced forum. I know the admin over here took pains to avoid participation in these forum battles and stay above the bickering, despite some rather personal attacks being launched against them.

Please don't speculate. As it happens, I just looked through every advanced applicant voting list through the beginning of 2006, and SnowyBoy either never applied or he applied during one of our forum transitions when phpBB ate submissions.

My apologies then, I didn't mean to overstep. I know running a forum is a thankless job.

I apologize for misunderstanding! I don't consider 40 "quality" posts by itself as rigid criteria! But, since I've read of another user that has gain access only with more than 800 posts (don't remember who)...I was thinking that the "real" criteria was around this number of posts! I've not taken into consideration the possibility that someone doesn't apply for advanced section.....'cause is the first thing I'll do as soon as I'll can do it!
Sorry for my poor eng!

I concur with many of the writers here.

Myself, I applied early december 2010, and have not heard anything since. :(

Yes, I know and understand that running a website like this takes a lot of time and effort.
Yes, I fully understand that moderators(or others with similar functions) at times may feel "spammed down" with mail from impatient, new members.

However, I would much appreciate a simple message stating "we have recieved your application, please be patient"

I hope to be able to make more postings in the near future. One of my last posts was moved to the advanced forum, and I can no longer access it :(

Let me finish with a huge "THANK YOU" to all the members who contribute with time, knowledge and plenty of nice, inspiring PICTURES

Brgds,

Well it is good that you enjoy being able to contribute to the advanced forums and all and back in 2006 when you were granted access it looked as if there was either much more interest in contributing to those forums or the pre-requisites for access were less intensive and have changed since then...

A quick look at the advanced forums membership listing shows:

in 2011 only ONE lucky member has been accepted to the advanced forums so far this year
in 2010 only 6 members were accepted into the advanced forums
in 2009 there were 23 members that were accepted
in 2008 there were 36 members that were accepted
in 2007 there were 68 members that were accepted
in 2006 there were 115 members that were accepted
in 2005 there were 106 members that were accepted
in 2004 there were 104 members that were accepted
in 2003 when the advanced section was created there were 30 members that were accepted and 2 group leaders

That is a total of 491 members with access to the advanced forums...

I don't know how many "active" members are around but the board indicates at the bottom of the main page that there are currently 53892 member accounts, without knowing how many are banned, abandoned/orphaned or inactive, it can be said that in each of those categories there MUST be more than 491 accounts of each of those types... Only 0.00911081422103466191 % of the registered accounts on this website have access to the advanced forums... Mathematically it does not appear that the odds are in one's favor when making that membership request...

I am just kind of curious as to why the interest in the advanced forums seems to have peaked and is in decline... When those forums were new many more people were accepted into them to contribute, but in the past five years very very few members in comparison have been accepted...

What is the rejection rate of people who have applied for access to those forums?
Are statistics on that even kept?

Perhaps there would be more interest in that particular aspect of the site if the process was more transparent and proceeded more rapidly than it has recently -- even if only 25% of applicants are accepted that would be only 28 people being considered in the past year and few months...

HOW DO I GET ACCESS TO THE ADVANCED FORUMS? READ HERE.

It is stated in the thread about the qualifications and procedures to apply that it is not a club, however the relative small list of members who have gained access to those forums as well as the dwindling trend in recent successfully approved applications is tending to indicate that those statements might not be fully accurate...

I am fully aware that this is a site management issue, this inquiry is NOT intended to start a debate about the process and I hope it is not interpreted that way, it is just curiosity into an issue that seems to happen magically behind the scenes and I can't be the only one here that is curious about how it works... A more in-depth explanation of how it all works behind the scenes might make the process function more smoothly...

If you must know, we're voting on 8 people right now, only 4 of which I even recognize by username from reading regular posts, the other 4, I have to actually find their posts and read through all of them one by one and see if they are up to having Advanced access. The other mods and admins have to also find time to sit and read all the posts, talk amongst ourselves about people who may be on the fence and may have to wait till next time, or people who may have lots of knowledge but can't seem to get along with others, that's the kind of stuff we look at.

I think when Medeco picking and decoding became a non advanced topic, that slowed down a lot of the traffic to Advanced. Also, some of the people who were into safe locks are no longer around, so the threads in those sub forums die down and things get quiet for a while. Anyways, I swore you had access to Advanced, but if you don't please apply, and don't worry, it's not my say only that goes into who makes it, there are plenty of people above me who vote as well.
