Three down, one to go...

Postby Rikeshar » 17 Sep 2004 23:29

Whee! Second post. Okay, so after using my classic safety pin pick and tension wrench for about a week, my Southord pick set came in the mail! Hurray! Also for about a week I've had 4 padlocks that I'm been trying to pick.

The first one I opened, and by far the easiest is brass 40mm Taskforce. Got that one down to about 2 seconds, safety pin or real pick

The second I opened is a steel 40mm Taskforce. This one requires a little bit more work than the brass, but I'm getting it.

The third, is a Master No.3 I've only opened this once, because I'm scared to close it again for fear of not being able to get it

The fourth one though I'm having some trouble with. I didn't buy this one, I found it out in my tool box. It's old, and there's no sign of the keys anywhere. The only details are that it's a brass padlock with 'Sears' real big on one side. I've been reading through the posts here, and found one that made me think the pins might be security pins. Here's what's going on. The plug will turn slight when tension is applied to it. If I turn the plug slightly with my wrench, it's impossible to get ANY of the pins down. So I've had to use MINIMAL tension. I can get at most 3 pins to set, and I think the order goes 3-2-1 (1 being the front pin) Sometimes, I have to use a bit of force to get a pin down, and when it finally clicks, one of the pins that was already set, re-sets. Anyone have any ideas, other than trying even less torque?

You said it was sitting out for a while. Unless you have cleaned and lubed your lock with something like Tri-FLO (wd40 gums up over time) you may be trying to fight dirt. This is very fustrating even now, I can't imagine what it would be like as a newbie.

Ah.. hm.. I'll have to try that then. What lubes do you recommend? Besides the one you already stated?

astroglide is better, its much slicker and doesn't get sticky when your done.

Lukes right, Super Lube dri film is really great, it cleans out the lock and then leaves a graphite like powder in there and its excelent....it costs about $20 aussie dollars....

I need to pick up some lube... I get a lot of locks from a friend of mine who owns a hardware store. The ones I get are usually pretty dirty and gummy inside.

One lube that I have found works in a pinch is Bacitracin. You can find it or a similar cream in most first aid kits. I don't know if I'd use it on a lock that I intend on keeping, but I did try it as a last ditch effort about 6 years ago on an alarm panel lock that was dirty and sticky, and it is still working strong today.
