Did i buy the wrong beginner set?

Postby xabdullahx » 16 Mar 2011 16:37

Hi.
I am really excited about this, so i hurried as i always do and bought this set "PXS-14".
But now, i am reading around in this website, and i realized theres a difference between the locks we have in europe and the locks you have in the US. - I didnt know!

The question is.. what do i do. can i still use this set here or should i return it (which is a hard procedure since i bought it online)

Is there really that big difference :/?

Euro locks have smaller/harder to deal with key ways. US locks have a bit larger key ways on your standard common lock. The Euro picks are also referred to as "slimline" simply because they are not as bulky hight wise along the picks blade and will usually fit in much easier. Im sure you could probably find a few locks over there which standard picks could easily work with.

Thanks to you I can't stop calling them that -_-

Slimlines are good for Euro locks, but unless the lock has a very para-centric key way, you should be able to use your picks, you just might have a little less maneuver room inside the lock. I use regular picks all the time on Euro locks with restrictive key ways. Give them a try and see what happens.

I use a standard size Peterson short hook on Yale locks all the time. It can be a bit of a tight fit sometimes but it works and I'm guessing that a SO and Peterson picks are about the same size. And I've heard that they use a lot of locks with the Yale Y1 keyway over in around europe, or at least in the UK so all is not lost.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Your picks will be fine for the types of locks you should start learning on. by the time you have a need for the slimline picks, you will know why and how to treat them so you won't be a noob with good picks learning by bending them.

I already bended/broke one of the picks ^^ - Thats what they are called right?
but the sets comes with nice plastic arms, it broke inside the arm, so nothing i can feel really

But aww.. an amazing feeling opening your first lock :D! - practiced for about 1 hour today. opened the lock a few times (3-4 times). definitely gonna practice a bit more later when i have more time.
I started out by not removing any pins, i think its a 5 pins lock? (http://www.harald-nyborg.dk/merinfo.asp ... =1073&n=10 - The description just says "Lock 50 mm with 2 keys") - :p

But i have a problem. When i try to open the lock, i put in first the wrench. then i am using the pick to pull the pins up (starting by the pin most far away). The first few pins go up nicely, while i am turning with the wrench of course, but somehow... or sometimes.. i get almost all the pins up. except one i think. typically its the middle i forgot. but when i try to pull it up its like its loose, and i just pull up and nothing happens. (it just falls down again)

And also sometimes, while i am turning with the wrench, and i am going to pick the last pin, like its too hard to pull up because of the wrench. am i turning too hard? but if i loose a bit the rest of the pins will go down.

Also, i learned, sometimes while picking, you might get lucky and the lock will open immediatly :p

I got another question.
Can picklocking be used to open car doors? that would be a life saver if i forget the keys inside the car some day!

Car locks are a bit different than your typical pin and tumbler cylinder. It would be a bad idea to try to use normal picks on a car.

Actually that depends on the type of car lock, wafer lock, track lock, tibbe.
But since that is an Advanced Area topic I'm not going to go any further on that.

Generally pins that "Seem loose" are the pins that are set properly (that is good) the ones that feel jammed are the ones that you have pushed up too high, or you are pushing too hard on the wrench (turning).

Loosen up on the turning, and try to "feel" the pins go up rather than pushing/forcing them.
