What would you use?

Postby Dartan » 10 Feb 2006 14:12

I did do a search on this first and didn't find anything on it, so if it's been discussed before, I appologize (and am ready to be flamed).

I've been picking locks for just over a week now. I can pick kwikset locks quickly (with or without security pins) and just realized that every lock on my house is a kwikset type lock. That made me think that I should probably upgrade the locks on my house (if even I can pick it with a little work, most anybody else would probably be able to as well). So, what do people in the know (ie locksmiths) use for locks on their house? And before you mention Mortice locks, I'm not about to change my doors to accomodate them.

Of course, I was also thinking that 3 of the 5 outside doors are just one big pane of glass or have windows on them and that any lock I put on there could just as easily be bypassed by a brick. I suppose in that case my best defense is my neurotic springer that will most like bark and pee on them...In any case, I'm still curious to know what locks people on here would use to secure their home.

I would go with a schlage lock set. Get the one that uses spool/security pins in them, I'd say that this will deter 90% of all burglers away from your front door. There was a post made earlier this week that had a link to TNLS website with a good article about this subject but since I couldnt find it here it is again....http://www.thenationallocksmith.com/public.asp?2
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Wow. That article got silly toward the end. "Double diabolical Shudo-Kahn death kick", indeed.

Still, fantastic display of quality there. If it takes a forklift to force past it, I'm a fan.
There is no means by which I can be removed from the love of God. For this, I am indescribably glad.

I agree with Eyes_Only on the choice of Schlage, and don't forget to get double cylinder locks (a key needs to be used
on both sides of the door) if you're more serious about a security upgrade or have any windows or easily destroyed
sections of your door.

I've only just now realized how old this thread is...I'm a real genius sometimes.

I'm no expert, but Schlage... and several people inside with weapons.

I agree...go with Schlage...anything better is probably futile unless you have some awesome doors and frames.

I have Everest C145s on my doors and in the padlocks on the shed doors...they're pretty cheap, 6-pin, and have an extra check pin. I've got some BEST stuff on a few interior doors, and some other padlocks, mainly because I'm too lazy (and cheap) to key them to everything else. All the doors and padlocks I actually used are keyed alike, though...the whole one key fits all thing is really nice.
