Convert Electronic lock to Manual ??

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Convert Electronic lock to Manual ??

Postby Hellbender » 3 May 2011 16:50

Hello,

Newbie here, sorry if this question has been asked, but I tried the search and could not find anything.

I have an S&G electronic lock (single battery) on my gun safe, and would like to convert it to a manual lock.

I don't trust the electronic anymore as the battery is only lasting a few weeks and I don't want to put good money after bad by just replacing the electronic.

Would anyone have a link or other info on this process?

Where to buy parts, etc, etc.

Thanks!

You might want to put your location in your profile, as we have members from all over the world here. Different locations might give a different answer.

Judging by your description there is a SERIOUS problem with your safe lock. I would STRONGLY recommend you NOT close and lock your safe until you get the problem resolved.
Replacing a safe lock is really not a job for amateurs ,
My advice would be to contact S&G ( Sargent And Greenleaf) to find the nearest Dealer or check http://clearstar.com/ (find a locksmith) to locate a professional in your area.

keysman,

Thanks for your reply, and I apologize for not stating my location.

I am a retired mechanical engineer and part-time gunsmith, I live in a very rural location and prefer to do the work myself.

I have contacted two local locksmiths and both just want to replace the electronic.

The lock is past S&G's warranty period and I really would prefer to put a mechanical lock in it's place if possible, if not, or if too labor intensive, I will just buy another safe.

I have pre-marked where I'll need to hole-saw if the current lock gives out.

Thanks for any help.

I forgot to mention I have a full machine shop w/ milling machine, lathe, etc. etc. So fabricating brackets, etc would not be a problem.

But I would prefer to just buy the proper parts, if possible.

Just ask the locksmiths for a SG6730 lock and change key. like this: http://www.aklocks.co.uk/catalog/safes/ ... -6730-6731

Mounting holes should be the same as your electronic lock and the spindle hole should already be there. you will need to learn what a spline key is when it comes to safe locks and cut the spindle to the correct door thickness.

As stated above, even if you're handy, this is not typically a learn as you go kind of thing because if you screw up even a little, you may get yourself locked out of the container or have a lock that doesn't work as smoothly as you expect it to.

This technical paper will teach you the basics of safe locks and how they operate, and some of the names for the various parts, it is a very good read:

Good Luck!

As stated above a S&G 6700 should sort you out.

Ebay will probably provide you with one, especially in th US, and new ones come with fitting instructions.

If you are used to mechanics and the like, the fitting is pretty straight forward.
It's all about the tension . . .

Just a small hint, before you just buy a 6700 or any other lock. You need to look at the installed lock and determine the a couple of things.

Is the bolt just blocking or is it a direct attachment, were the bolt is attached to the safe's boltwork?

How long is the bolt? How far does it extend outside the lock body when the bolt is extended or retracted?

Just keep in mind that even the most experienced safe tech can screw these things up, but good luck.
